Pretty Girls Rivers (PS4, PS5, Switch, PC)

Play a version of Mahjong with slightly different rules, all the while unlocking outfits for a bevvy of anime ladies in Pretty Girls Rivers.  It’s available on current PlayStation systems, Switch, and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here.

In Rivers, you still match tiles with the same character on them, but the rules are a little bit different.  You can match tiles right next to each other here, and they can even be enclosed by other tiles.  The other way to match and clear tiles is if they can be connected with only turning corners in a line twice.  It’s a little hard to understand that aspect at first, and they don’t explain it very well in the rules section.  But I was able to grasp the concept after a few rounds.

Each stage has four levels that you must pass, and on the fourth one, you’ll unlock an outfit for an anime lady you can view in the dressing room.  You can play on either Normal or Easy modes.  Normal has a time limit, but you can view your high scores.  Easy mode doesn’t let you record a score, but you get no time limit and can shuffle three times and get hints three times as well. It’s almost TOO easy, but if you want a game that lets you get the platinum trophy without too much effort, this is one of those games.

Nothing really too bad wrong with this one.  The anime lady aspect is a bit unnecessary, and as a dumb American, I do wish they’d let you change the characters on the tiles to something easier to see.  But this one’s still pretty fun once you get the hang of it, and the inclusion of an easy mode is nice.

Kid Factor:

Pretty Girls Rivers is rated T for Teen with an ESRB descriptor of Suggestive Themes.  Before you even start the game there is a disclaimer that says all ladies in the game are portrayed as 18 years or older, so that’s a warning sign right there.  I didn’t notice any outfits that were too risqué, but the game is still best for older players.
