Albacete Warrior (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S, PC)

Play as a ninja in Spain in this beat ‘em up featuring sprite based characters against 3-D backdrops.  Joining you is your faithful pet chicken Pepito and your sensei Paco in this game available for all current consoles and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here.

You can punch and kick, as well as use fellow monks as shields.  You can also swing your pet around like a weaponized rubber chicken as well.  I found myself doing this most often as you have a longer reach.  And that’s pretty much all you do in the game.  Multiplayer is supported, which is always good in a beat ‘em up.

I didn’t stay interested in this one long mainly because it’s way too hard.  Plus you can’t exit out of a combo once you start, which can leave you open to attacks, and that was frustrating.  It’s not the worst thing I’ve ever played, but with so many much better beat ‘em ups out there like Streets of Rage 4 and TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, I’d rather just play those.

Kid Factor:

Albacete Warrior is rated M for Mature with ESRB descriptors of Blood, Use of Alcohol and Tobacco, Suggestive Themes, and Strong Language.  Characters explode in pixel shades of red when defeated, and your ninja is a heavy drinker and cusses a lot in the text, making him not very likable.  Because of this and the high difficulty level, this game is best for older players only.
