Moe Waifu H: BlockBlast (PS4, PS5, Switch)

Well I’m not sure what the “Moe” means but “Waifu” is what you hook your internet up to, right?  Nah, I’m just joking.  I know it means like a pretend girlfriend or something.  Anyway, in this game you can unlock pictures of anime ladies in different outfits by playing an Arkanoid and BreakOut style block breaking ball and paddle game.  It’s available on PlayStation consoles and Nintendo Switch, but reviewed on PS4 here.

Gameplay is very simple.  You move your paddle around the bottom of the screen and try not to miss the ball.  If you miss the ball and lose all your lives, or run out of time, it’s Game Over.  When you break certain blocks, power-ups will fall down and if you catch them with your paddle, you can usually get a power-up. These include points, expanding your paddle, slowing down the ball, making the ball pass through bricks, extra lives, and more.  But watch out for power-downs, like one that makes your paddle really short!  When you clear a round, you unlock a picture of an anime lady you can view in the gallery.

My main problem with this game is that it’s way too hard and when your ball gets on the top of the screen, the score and other icons cover it up, so it can be hard to keep track of your ball.  They could’ve just made the score and things fade out when your ball gets up there.  Also, ball physics and putting “English” on the ball with the paddle feels a little off.  And if you run out of time, you get a Game Over no matter how many lives you have left.  I’d rather just play Arkanoid.

Kid Factor:

Moe Waifu H BlockBlast is rated T for Teen with an ESRB descriptor of Suggestive Themes.  Some of the anime ladies you unlock are wearing skimpy bikinis and lingerie.  That and the high difficulty make this one best for older gamers only.
