Heroes Battle Awakening (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S, PC)
There’s imitating a game, and then there’s downright ripping off a game. Which do you think Heroes Battle Awakening is? This is pretty much just the same game as Plants vs. Zombies, with a new coat of paint. It now just has a cartoony medieval fantasy theme. It’s available on all current consoles, but reviewed on PS4 here.
If you’ve played Plants vs. Zombies before, you’ll know what to do here. And if you haven’t, it’s a good thing that game is easy to learn as there are no instructions here. You move a cursor around the screen and collect coins by running over them. When you have enough, you can place a character like a house to get more coins (like the sunflowers). Or knights that shoot flaming arrows like the peashooters, or minotaurs that do melee attacks right in front of them like the potatoes. You pass the level when all enemies are defeated. But if even one monster gets to your side of the screen, you must start the mission over.
Honestly, if you are in the mood for this type of game, just play Plants vs. Zombies instead. They just released a remaster of it that I reviewed last year. Only way I could see getting this one is if you just want more of the same with some more challenge. Because in this one, if a monster makes it to your side, there is no lawn mower to push them back for one last ditch effort, so it’s a lot harder.
Kid Factor:
Heroes Battle Awakening is rated E-10 with an ESRB descriptor of Fantasy Violence. You hit cartoony enemies with weapons and they just disappear in a puff of smoke when defeated. Reading skill is helpful for some of the text, but not necessary just to play. Younger gamers may find this one too difficult.
