Soldner-X 2: Final Prototype Definitive Edition (Switch, PS4)

Last year I reviewed Soldner X, a 2D horizontally scrolling shooter.  And now here’s the sequel.  It’s available on Switch and PS4, but reviewed on Switch here.

Controls are pretty simple.  Just move with the control stick and press the button to fire.  You can select different difficulty levels and play single or two player co-op.  Press the shoulder button to switch between different weapons, like a straight shot or a spreader.  The third option will change depending on what power-up you get, like a electric homing shot, wave beam, or mines.  You can collect power-ups that’ll speed you up, give you points, have other ships flank you for more firepower, etc.  As you play different difficulty modes, you can unlock new stages, gallery artwork, and challenge modes like Survivor.  When you get hit, you’ll lose some of your energy.  And when it’s all gone, you’ll lose a life.  Lose all lives and it’s Game Over.  My only big problem is that the power-ups look a lot like the bullets, just big round flashy orbs.  But otherwise, this is just a decent shooter that does what it sets out to do.

Kid Factor:

Soldner X-2 is rated E for Everyone with an ESRB descriptor of Mild Fantasy Violence.  You shoot spaceships that explode and that’s it.  Reading skill is helpful for the text, but not necessary just to play.
