Unbox the Room (Switch, PC)
Last year I reviewed a game about packing things in boxes in a house. It wasn’t very much fun, just like in real life. But what about unpacking things from boxes once you move into a new home? Would that make a better game? (turns out, yes it does) Unbox the Room lets you unpack boxes and arrange the items in little rooms. It’s available on Switch and PC, but reviewed on Switch here.
There are two modes of play. Story mode has you unpacking boxes for clients who want certain things arranged in their rooms. You might have to put an umbrella by the door or put certain plush toys on a bed, for instance. This story mode kind of reminded me of the Happy Home Designer and Happy Home Paradise add-ons for Animal Crossing games. Sometimes in Story Mode you have to put things in two rooms, or get boxes from a truck. You finish the level once all the boxes are gone and you’ve fulfilled the requirements of the client. There is also a Sandbox mode where you are free to put anything you like in a room and arrange it how you want and save it for later.
To play, you’ll move a cursor around the screen and click on boxes to open and unpack them. Once all the items in a box are gone, it’ll disappear. You can also move items around with the cursor and rotate them with a button. You view the game in a 2D isometric fashion with 16-bit style pixel graphics. People who like stress-free games and enjoy decorating rooms in Animal Crossing may like this one.
Kid Factor:
Nothing violent or objectionable here. Reading skill is a must, though. Unbox the Room is rated E for Everyone.
