Springbot: The Last Spark (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S, PC)
Once there was a land filled with happy, peaceful robots. But one day they started acting strangely, except for one springy legged robot. Now it’s up to Springbot to save the day in this simple 2D platformer. It’s available on all current consoles and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here.
There are four worlds with ten stages each, and you unlock the next by completing the last. Your robot can run, jump, push objects, and that’s it. To defeat enemies, simply bounce on their heads. If you get hit, you’ll start at either the beginning or the last checkpoint you reached. But you get unlimited tries. You can also collect coins for an extra challenge. At the end of a level, they’ll tally how many times you died and how many coins you collected. There is a difficulty selection, but I couldn’t tell the difference between them. You still die in one hit. My main problem is the hit detection isn’t great. You have to hop on the enemies exactly square on top, otherwise it counts as a miss and becomes frustrating quickly.
Kid Factor:
Springbot: The Last Spark is rated E for Everyone with an ESRB descriptor of Mild Fantasy Violence. You just hop on robots’ heads and defeated characters just turn white and disappear. Reading skill is helpful for the text, but not necessary just to play. Younger gamers may find it too difficult, though.
