The next new Shovel Knight game we’re going to look at is a multiplayer fighting side-game.  It features characters and locations from the game and Smash Bros. style gameplay.  It comes with Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove on the Switch, which we looked at last time, but it’s also a game you can download separately on all current consoles and PC, but reviewed on Switch here.

Yacht Club Games really made a name for themselves with Shovel Knight, one of the most successful indie games ever.  It’s an 8-bit styled 2D action platformer starring a knight with an unusual weapon: a shovel!  But it proves to be an effective way to defeat enemies, dig up treasure, and pogo bounce over obstacles.  The game takes the best of the most memorable 8-bit classics, like Mega Man, Castlevania, DuckTales, and Super Mario Bros. 3.  Shovel Knight has even appeared in other games, like an assist trophy in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or even a playable fighter in Blade Strangers.  To celebrate Shovel Knight’s success, this week is going to be Shovel Knight Week here at GamerDad.com!  I’ve got three articles and reviews based on recent Shovel Knight releases!  First up is Shovel Knight Treasure Trove, which takes all the DLC and side games from the Shovel Knight franchise and puts them all into one game!  It’s available on all current consoles and PC, but reviewed on Switch here.

At the beginning of every year I like to write a blog about the games I’m looking forward to in that coming year, so here we are again with games I’m looking forward to in 2020!  Now keep in mind that these aren’t ALL the games I’m looking forward to.  More will be announced at E3 and such I’m sure as the year goes on.  And there are some games that I’m looking forward to that have been announced, but I’m not sure they’ll really come out in 2020, like Breath of the Wild 2 and Metroid Prime 4.  But you never know.  But here are a list of 2020 games that I’m PRETTY sure are coming this year and I’m looking forward to them.

Tools Up! is a co-op couch multiplayer game where you must use teamwork to perform home renovations.  Paint walls, carpet floors, and clean up before the strict time limit expires.  It’s kind of like Overcooked, except with construction instead of cooking.  It’s available to download on all current consoles and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here.  Speaking of the review, I’ve got a treat for you today.  The folks who played this game for this review all have experience with home renovation.  First, there’s me.  While I write game reviews on the side, my full time job is working as a sales associate at a major hardware store chain.  I don’t do any D.I.Y. projects myself, but I certainly know my way around a hardware store.  But my Player Two for this review was my stepfather Jamie, who used to do home renovation projects before he started driving a truck again.  So with our combined experience, we should be able to ace this game, right?  Well, you’ll just have to find out by reading this review!

For many years, Zen Studios has been making original video pinball tables for their Pinball FX and Zen Pinball outlets.  Now they’re tackling real life classic pinball machines in video form from the Williams and Bally lineups.  Volume 5 of this set includes three more tables, including my all time favorite pinball machine ever!  YES!  To play them, first you need to download the Pinball FX3 hub (available for most current consoles and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here).  And then you can buy and download table sets.

I love it when a game’s title explains to you perfectly what you’ll be doing in the game.  In Tap Pop Balloon, you’ll tap the screen to pop floating balloons for points.  Don’t let any float away to the top of the screen or you’ll lose a heart!  Lose all three of your hearts and it’s Game Over.  Also watch out for balloon with pictures of skulls on them.  If you tap one of those, you’ll immediately lose the game, no matter how many hearts you have!  It’s available as a free-to-play download on mobile devices, but reviewed on iPad here.

Halfbrick has made some of the most well known games for mobile devices and consoles (but mostly mobile).  There’s Raskulls, which is what a sequel to Mr. Driller probably should’ve been.  And the continuous runner/flyer Jetpack Joyride.  And who could forget Fruit Ninja from the early days of mobile gaming?  And now the characters from those titles have come together for a player vs. player action strategy game called Magic Brick Wars.  It kind of reminds me of the classic arcade game Rampart.  It’s available as a free-to-play download on mobile devices, but reviewed on iPad here.

Recently I reviewed SkullGirls: 2^nd Encore.  It’s a 2-D one-on-one fighter with cartoony graphics and I’ve been wanting to review it since 2012 when it came out, but for whatever reasons I wasn’t able to.  But I got my chance when it came out on the Switch!  For what’s considered an indie game, this one is very good.  Almost on par with fighters like BlazBlue and Guilty Gear!  I was very impressed with the creativity of the characters and even the storylines in the Story Mode were pretty interesting.  And usually they aren’t in fighting games.  So when that happens, I usually like to write a blog about the characters, and so we’ll do that here.  Some slight story spoilers here and there, just to warn you, but the game HAS been out since 2012.

In a world made of wool and stiches lives a tattered plush animal named Stuffy.  He’s all alone and doesn’t know how he got there, as he’s not too bright.  But one day he meets a robotic firefly named Glitch.  Glitch has also lost its memory and the two decide to venture together to find out why Stuffy is all tattered and why there are other machines and robotic bugs in the fabric world. Woven is a 3-D puzzle platformer with point and click adventure elements, and it’s available for all current game consoles and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here.
