What Parents Should Know: PTC Alert about GTAIV
The Parent’s Television Council has decided that they need to get on their soapbox and has issued an alert about the upcoming game Grand Theft Auto IV. After reading it I decided to do as they asked at the end, and share this with every concerned parent I know.
This probably isn’t going to be quite what they had in mind, though.

I’m 37! I’m not Old.
It’s my birthday. The First Day of the Rest of my Life.
Yep, it is and believe me. for a while there it looked like I wasn’t going to see another one of these. I’m still grappling with it. Almost dying late last summer I mean. 37 is the age when men tend to have a “midlife crisis” – the “heart attack revelation” is supposed to be reserved for those north of 50 – and I’m still dealing with the notion that my “midlife crisis” might have been the end of me. I still think about it a bit. I still get thoughtful email from people asking about my heart. My heart is good. Strong. more…
GamerDad Family: Origin Story
Happy Birthday Maggie! (Late, I know, the actual day was 4/20) My daughter and first born is now 8-years old, super sweet, and learning – every day – better tactics on how she can butter up dad. I gave her an MP3 player (she must keep it in her room for now) and an iDog speaker thingie to play it. She got the obligatory Hannah Montana games, Super Smash Bros. (we’ve already had a few battle royales hereabouts), clothes and some stuff from The Littlest Petshop. See? 8 is where the little girl meets the tween and they eye each other nervously. To celebrate, lets go back in time to the day it all began.
Medical Opinion: Dr. Byerly
Dr. Byerly is a GamerDad reader and an MD. He was kind enough to send us this Op/Ed on gaming and how it helped him become a doctor.by Dr. Erich Byerly M.D.
Video and computer games get a lot of bad press. People blame games for everything from teenage violence to childhood obesity. I personally believe that playing these games does have some redeeming qualities.
Why Kids Want to Play God of War
Have you heard about God of War? Well, if you’re a parent – you should have. The game sets new benchmarks for both “Intense Violence” and “Sexual Situations” – and the ESRB descriptors don’t stop there! But guess why your teen really wants to play it more…
Console Guide: Leapster
By far the most frequent question I get here at GamerDad is:
“What console should I buy for my kids?”
Should I Buy a Leapster?

GamerDad on the Radio: This Saturday 4/19/08

There will be a special guest and the topic is child safety online. It all goes down at 8pm EST, 7pmCST, 6pmPST.
What is it with Spaceballs?
I have been an unabashed Star Wars fan for 31 years now, saw Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein more than 30 years ago, and was therefore terribly excited back in ’87 when a crew of friends I’d made during high school and college assembled in Boston to see Mel Brook’s SpaceBalls. So what happened?
Unplugged: The Awards Shows
There aren’t any ceremonies with half-naked movie stars falling out of their clothes, but there are several major awards given out for board games. A few of the biggest include: the Spiel des Jahres, the Deutscher SpielePreis, and the Games Magazine Game of the Year .
Momgamer: When Everything Old is New Again
I’ve always had this list in my head of things that I wasn’t going to mention to the kids. A partial list would include Dr. Who, The Watchmen, Pink Floyd, and several specific Heinlein novels. Some of my favorite things are stuff I got to discover for myself when I left home. I didn’t want to take that from them by leaving them nothing left to find.
