Trade-Ins for Troops launches game program
Drew Koehler, founder of the Hardcore Christian Gaming Association, has launched a site called ‘Trade-Ins for Troops’. The premise is that instead of trading your games to GameStop for $2 or trading them on Goozex for a few hundred points (minus postage), you send them to the ‘Trade -Ins for Troops’ site and they do the rest.
Momgamer’s Games of the Year – Runner Up Edition
I didn’t want to just list off the five games that are at the top of all the game site lists. Yes, Bioshock is amazing. But everyone else already told you that. Gaming’s a lot bigger and more diverse than you might imagine. I’m going to go off the beaten path here a bit and come up with a few games that hit the sweet spot at my house over the course of the year.
Since my household runs older than many here, we’re going to have more to say about the higher ratings. I broke them out by Gamerdad Seal of Approval categories, with the hardware platform and the ESRB rating provided for your information.

Play! A Video Game Symphony
Video games have come a long way in their 30 some odd year history. Blocky pixels have been replaced with smooth, 3-D polygons. Controlling your character has gone from one joystick and one button to actually moving the whole controller yourself. And what was jarring bleeps and bloops is now sweeping musical scores worthy of an orchestral soundtrack. And now, finally, people can enjoy their favorite video game songs played by a real orchestra with Play! A Video Game Symphony.
Matt’s 2007 Gaming Best
2007 has come and gone. While I was able to take some time off of work in the first half of the year, my new fathering duties and a slight growth in my non-videogaming hobbies cut deeply into my free time spent playing video games. All is not lost, as there were still a few games out there that everyone should consider (at least everyone who has similar tastes in strategy gaming….) Just think of my short list here as the daytime awards, where all the smaller categories are awarded as opposed to the big evening celebration put forth by Cary.
Go You Packers!
I’m a football fan who was born in Wisconsin. I grew up where the Steelers, then Bears, then Rams (well, once), then Niners play their games but in the back of my mind I was a Packer fan. The story of Lambeau, Lombardi, Starr, Neitzche, McGee, and the rest was known to me and I always cringed when people made fun of the hapless Pack. I didn’t watch a lot of football as a result. The one-two-punch of Football videogaming (it was Real Talk Joe Montana for Genesis if you must know) and the Forty-Niners winning the Superbowl while I was in SF and in college made me a fan again. Moving to Wisconsin in 1995 – just as White, Holmgren and Favre were getting started – made the Packers my obsession. Madden, year-after-year made me a fan of the game itself.
Simon’s Best Video (and Computer) Games of 2007 Awards Show!
..will be a lot less entertaining than Cary’s, sorry. But hey, you’re here now, may as well read on!
Anybody with an interest in games knows that 2007 was a fantastic year. If you disagree, you really should find a new hobby, because no matter what your preferred platform or genre, you were handed some golden titles. This list however is about my personal favorites, most of which you’ll find reviews for at GamerDad. There’s no ranking here, as it has worked out that just about all my favorites were quite different types of games, it would be too hard to compare! Instead, consider this list as games that I want to draw special attention to.

Cake or Die!
Jocelyn loves video games. She also loves to bake. Combine the two, and you have Snack or Die, where she details some amazing game-related (mostly) sweet treats.
We’ve had discussions before over at the GamerDad forums about taking something from the videogame world and turning it into a family activity, and I can’t think of a yummier project than tackling any of these, from the modern Portal cake cookies to the adorable retro Burgertime cookie burgers to the classic savory Pac-Man crackers.
If you’re not charmed, you have no taste buds and hate games.
Gaming with Kids: Good or Bad?
MSNBC has posted a well researched and well-written article about a topic close to my heart lo these past 5 years and that’s the benefits of gaming with children. The article quotes several families who do this. There’s a dissenter or two and the article ends inconclusively (which is just good journalism). It reminds me of that poll AOL did recently where one parents claimed that its a “waste of time” – See I’d argue ANYTHING you do with your kids is never a waste of time and I feel sorry for that guy’s kid. Anyway, come on in to find a link to the article and my main beef with it. (Illustration by Duane Hoffman, reproduced here for commentary)

My post-holiday brain-dump
So you might have noticed I’ve been out of it for a bit – aside from yesterday’s note about Apple, my last blog entry was on December 14th. So let me start off by wishing everyone a belated Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy New Year, Happy Birthday to those who had them and whatever else I’ve missed along the way. Life has been crazy here, and I have been away from home for various reasons, so rather than attempt to detail everything that has been happening over the past month I figure I’ll toss out a bunch of random stuff. OK? Here goes …
Mass Effect Misinformation
Can you believe people actually think this game has hardcore pornography? Well, don’t take my word for
it. Take Colleen Hannon’s. She’s our MomGamer (no relation) and she cuts right through the garbage. Here’s what parents need to know!
