Pac-Man’s 30th Anniversary Celebration: Cary’s Favorite Pac-Games

This year marks Pac-Man’s 30th Anniversary, but aside from Google making a playable Pac-Man logo game earlier (which was awesome), I haven’t heard about any other celebrations from Namco. Hopefully we’ll hear something about it at E3. I’ve read rumors about the creator of Sonic working on a Pac-Man 3-D platformer, and rumblings on a new Pac-Game called Pac-Man Rebirth, but nothing officially confirmed by Namco. So I decided to take it upon myself to celebrate Pac-Man’s 30th with a (possible) series of blogs.

Piracy Thoughts

I thought I’d throw this out there.  A friend recently got up on a high horse, looked down from on-high and said that media piracy is immoral because you’re depriving the creator of income. As a content provider, I like his thinking (even though I actually believe piracy ultimately sells more content than it cannibalizes and that piracy protection causes more piracy than they think) but the guy is a hypocrite. Sure, he doesn’t illegally pirate but he – and maybe YOU – are denying the creators of income all the time! Here’s a few thoughts on how you’re doing it and how it being legal doesn’t make any difference to the authors, producers, musicians etc., you’re “ripping off.”

6/8/10

GamerGirl (10) is still loving the heck out of the Sims 3 on the Mac, GamerBoy is pretty much ONLY playing Super Mario Galaxy 2 and I’ve finished Red Dead Redemption and am about 2/3rds of the way through Alan Wake. My iPad love is growing by the moment and I have a few more apps to speak of — oh and an update on my little (and shrinking) book. First, let me bore you with the book.

Cary Rounds Up Red Dead Redemption

Last weekend, teenage brother Jeff bought Red Dead Redemption. In just a few short months, he’ll be old enough to play M rated games on his own, so we let him get this one. One of the messages I think the GamerDad Web site conveys is to sit down and watch your kids play games, and talk about what’s appropriate and inappropriate in them. You might be surprised what you can learn from your kids and the games they play. Such is the case with this new Western game.

My Most Memorable Mario Moments

Well I imagine most Nintendo fans are now or soon to be knee-deep in the new Super Mario Galaxy 2 game. So in honor of all that, here’s a blog about my favorite Mario games and other fun Mario moments.

Playable Pac-Man on Google!

When visiting Google.com to do an Internet search, have you ever noticed that sometimes they have a different logo, usually to commemorate some kind of special event? Well, today their logo looks like the Pac-Man maze because this year marks Pac-Man’s 30th anniversary! But that’s not all! If you wait for a few seconds, you can actually PLAY Pac-Man right there on Google!

Red Dead Redemption -Oops

“The game contains a scene in which two characters have sex on a table; there is a brief instance of female nudity. One sequence depicts a man injecting himself with a syringe filled with cocaine. Language such as “f**k,” “c*nt,” and ‘sh*t” can be heard in the dialogue.”  –OOPS!  I cut and pasted this from the ESRB as “notes” because … I haven’t written this review yet!  I didn’t mean to post this is the bottom line.

5/12/10 + Vlad Update

The kids are still gaming. Henry has been doggedly conquering Wario Shake It, a game he’s given up on many times before. If anyone ever claims videogames don’t teach anything – perseverance and imaginative problem solving are definitely things you can throw back in their faces. I’ve always taught him not to get mad. And beyond that, not to get frustrated. And beyond that, not to give up. But if you do give up to avoid getting mad or frustrated, come back one day and finish the job. The boy is doing me proud. Maggie is back on Club Penguin due to friends but she’s asking about Gardening Mama, so I might need to get a copy of that.

Happy GamerMother’s Day

To all the moms, grandmoms, gamermoms, and single dads out there. Have a happy day!  Here’s hoping your children buy you a card, flowers, gifts, candy and maybe a video game.  My mom is going to have to settle for this post and dinner with her lovely son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. She deserves the best, so if she wants she can take the kids home with her for the week. Yep, the whole week. Now that’s a gift for any mom/grandmom!  No seriously, pop in a copy of Cooking Mama into a game system and remember you owe this lovely woman your life!

Vlad – for now, Rejected

I got the news today…  Oh Boy… It seems my little book didn’t make the grade. Now i’m feeling very small. I thought I had it all … And now I take fall. Vlad was rejected by both Agent and publisher. Lose Turn, do not collect $200. – Sounds dire, doesn’t it? Yes it does, but I am safe in the knowledge that what’s actually happened is that George Lucas has turned me down. Sooo… paging Mr. Speilberg and so on down the list. Instead of a homer at my first time at bat, it’s a ground rule double. There’s always the next pitch. But for now? Yeah, yeah it hurts. It really, really hurts.
