Welcome to GamerDad: Gaming with Children. My name is Andrew S. Bub - the GamerDad - and I've been writing about videogames, movies, and children for over 15 years now. After working as a magazine journalist, I switched gears to write about how media violence affects children, educating parents about them, and working closely with magazines, newspapers, major retailers and even politicians. GamerDad is an internationally recognized expert in this field. Games, movies and media are fun, kids and families love them, they aren't going away. So join me in cutting through the hype and lets have a real conversation about the things that matter: Video Games, Violent Media, and their supposed effect on children and families.

Visco Collection (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S, PC)
Usually when I review an arcade game collection, it’s from a company that most everyone knows. Like Namco, Capcom, Taito, etc. But who the heck is Visco? Well, they mostly made a lot of obscure arcade titles for SNK’s NEO GEO arcade system. And now there’s a collection of some of those games. It’s available on all current consoles and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here. So let’s take a look at the games!
The Traveler’s Path (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S, PC)
Cary’s Best Video Games of 2023 Awards Show!
It’s the end of the year so you know what that means? It’s time for my “Best Video Games of 2023 Awards Show!” Keep in mind that this is my list only and no other outside opinions contributed. And if a game isn’t on this list, it either just didn’t appeal to me as much or I haven’t had a chance to play it yet. Ok with that out of the way, let’s begin!
Alien Hominid Invasion (Switch, Xbox One, X/S, PC)
I have so many good memories playing The Behemoth’s games and visiting their booth at PAX. It all started with Alien Hominid. I had this game on the GameCube, but it originally started out as a Flash game on Newgrounds. It was a hand drawn 2D run-and-gun that was very similar to Metal Slug, with lots of goofy humor and challenge. Since then I’ve enjoyed playing and reviewing other games from them, like Castle Crashers (one of the best beat ‘em ups ever made), and BattleBlock Theater. And now they’re back where they started with Alien Hominid Invasion, a brand new game with a multiplayer focus, but still fun for one. It’s available on some game consoles and PC, but reviewed on Switch here.
Garden Buddies (Switch, PC)
Meet Mutsy, a walking apple with eyes who wants to grow a garden and invite friends over for a dance party. Help Mutsy do this by designing your own garden and playing mini-games, and even learn some calming exercises along the way. Garden Buddies is available on Switch and PC, but reviewed on Switch here.
Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S, PC)
For several generations, youngsters have enjoyed watching shows on the Nickelodeon cable channel for kids. Heck, even when I was little back in the 80’s, I enjoyed watching Nick shows such as You Can’t Do that on Television, Danger Mouse, and Double Dare. Even more recently I’ve been known to watch shows on that channel like Invader ZIM and The Penguins of Madagascar. My younger brothers would watch shows on Nickelodeon, too, such as Rugrats and SpongeBob Squarepants. A couple of years ago we got a Smash Bros. clone featuring Nickelodeon characters from all generations, and now we get a sequel to that. It’s available on nearly all current game consoles and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here.
Settris (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S, PC)
Lily in Puzzle World (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S, PC)
Nacon Colorlight Wired Gamepad
I was recently offered a Nacon Colorlight gamepad to try out, and so I did. It is a somewhat high-end wired controller for use with an Xbox or PC. It’s most noticeable feature is its clear shell containing six programmable LED lights. As a wired controller, it is also catering to the hard-core gamer in order to minimize lag found in wireless controllers. I found the controller comfortable, easy to set up and more than enough for my casual gaming needs.
