GamerDad and family Welcome to GamerDad: Gaming with Children. My name is Andrew S. Bub - the GamerDad - and I've been writing about videogames, movies, and children for over 15 years now. After working as a magazine journalist, I switched gears to write about how media violence affects children, educating parents about them, and working closely with magazines, newspapers, major retailers and even politicians. GamerDad is an internationally recognized expert in this field. Games, movies and media are fun, kids and families love them, they aren't going away. So join me in cutting through the hype and lets have a real conversation about the things that matter: Video Games, Violent Media, and their supposed effect on children and families.

Apple further muddies the future of watching movies!

macbook-air.jpgSo, did you drink the Kool-Aid this afternoon?  I spend my seemingly annual ‘lunch hour in front of the computer’ checking out whatever Steve Jobs had to offer, and there was some pretty interesting stuff regardless of what segment of the electronic entertainment industry gets your blood flowing.

Cary’s Best Video Games of 2007 Awards Show!

ToadWelcome to the highly anticipated (by some people) Cary’s Best Video Games of 2007 Awards Show! With special guest stars like Gwendolyn from Odin Sphere, Ridley from Metroid Prime 3, Toad from the Mario series, Captain Rose from Zack & Wiki, Polka from Eternal Sonata, and many more! Actually there won’t be any guest stars like that since they’re not real. Awards shows just need guest stars, you know? But now, here’s your host, who definitely is real: Cary! Yay! (applause…please?)

Reader Letter – Cosmic Family

cosimic1.jpg“I didn’t find anything in your site about “Cosmic Family” for Wii. I rented it for my 3-year old (4 on Feb 16th) and after getting over some trouble with the Wii IR difficulties, she really loves it. I was curious what you thought of it.” – Reader

I could shout it from the mountain. “I Love Cosmic Family!”

I’m Okay!

Gotten a few emails lately asking after my health. I’m okay. No new heart attacks and the blood pressure, cholesterol, and all those other details are fine. I’m on the meds and at around 100%.  Or I would be if I didn’t have this one tiny little health related distraction…

Happy New Year! 08

img_0139.jpg’08 dawns and Linda and I find ourselves reflective. No we didn’t over-indulge. We did swap with my folks – they got the kids at our house; we got a night in their deluxe apartment (condo) in the sky. Linda got us tickets to see the comedian Jim “Hot Pocket” Gaffigan (he’s the pale giant in those Sierra Mist commercials) and we ate at a fancy place called The Trocadero. Fun times. We’re reflective because of my heart attack in Sept. ’07. We have a lot to celebrate, a lot to look forward to, and the promise of a brand new year!

Reader Letter – Praise!

tetrisds.jpgYour site is great. Our 10 year old wants to buy all sorts of stuff for WII and DS, and your info is invaluable. My taste in games tends towards Tetris and other old “lame” things our son will have nothing to do with.  From a parent who is a fan of your site.  (I have told all my friends at a parenting list-serve about you too.)  — Anonymous

Wow. Thanks and you’re welcome. I normally don’t print letters like this – we get them fairly often – but the reader has given me a chance to defend my favorite game ever!

Cary’s Christmas Booty

ZachWell, Christmas is over with, and I got everything I wanted. So here’s the typical blog describing what I got. And since Christmas is a time for giving as well as receiving, I thought I’d also tell you all what I GAVE to others. Because I like giving presents just as much, if not more so, than getting them. Yarrr! So come along, mehearties, and let me show you me Christmas booty…um, that didn’t come out quite right, did it?

Christmas at GamerDad Central

santa.jpgAfter a rainy weekend December 25th dawned bright, sunny, crisp, and beautiful.  “Mommy! Daddy! Santa came!” cried Henry, age 4, and ardent Santa believer.  “Yeah,” said his sister, Maggie, age 7: “And you weren’t very good this year!” That’s what Christmas morning was like at GamerDad central.

Child’s Play 2007

cp_nodate.gifI can’t believe I let this slip my mind. GamerDad’s favorite charity is run by the “not safe for kids” webcomic Penny Arcade. It’s brilliant and it works like this: You buy something from Amazon and specify which Children’s Hospital you’d like it to go it. The item arrives at the hospital and is used to help kids deal with the stress and anxiety of surgery. They’re at $974,000 and change. They broke a million last year, I’d like to see GamerDad.com and GamingWithChildren’s audiences to help them do that again. Do it for the children! More info here.

Mediawise Isn’t – 2007

07_vgrc1.gifWe’re proud to prove once again why people who don’t play video games need to hire some actual gamers as fact checkers if they ever want to, y’know, actually help parents.  Our own Colleen Hannon, the MomGamer (no relation) has crafted this excellent look at where MediaWise isn’t wise at all. (MediaWise please contact me if you’d like our help next year.  Thanks!)
