GamerDad’s Mended Heart
My name is Andrew S. Bub and I’m the GamerDad. I just returned from two weeks in the hospital for Quadruple Bypass Open-Heart-Surgery. In short, I almost died. My wife wrote a wonderful peice asking for donations and without warning, we were gratified to learn that several key gaming communities picked up our banner and ran with it. I can’t convey how much easier it is to heal and face mortality while knowing so many wonderful strangers are singing your praises and giving to your family. I’m not worthy, but I will strive to become so. more…
Gaming comes of age … the hard way
I am a pretty rare thing – a gamer in his 40’s. Sure, on some forums I frequent there are gamers considerably older than me, but by and large I have more than a decade on the ‘average’ gamer. It is an unfortunate reality of passing the ‘big Four-OH’ that you start to see more and more friends getting divorced and dropping dead. The GamerDad had a serious scare recently, but we have learned some good things about the people of the gaming world as a result.
The PSP ‘Slim’ … this is *so* not the DS-Lite!
I have voiced numerous criticisms of the PSP in the two and a half years I’ve owned it – there were the load times, mediocre music player, load times, short battery life, load times, compromised controls … oh, and did I mention the load times? Yet when I grabbed a single system to take on a weekend away it was the PSP, and when my boys asked which I preferred and I answered the DS Lite my wife was surprised and said “but you play the PSP much more”. So when Sony’s new ‘PSP-2000’ game system started appearing at retailers ahead of the announced release date, it is clear what happened – I made a beeline for Target and got myself the ‘Daxter Pack’ which included the new ‘PSP Slim’ as well as a copy of Daxter and a Family Guy UMD movie. Read on and get the answers to some questions that I had – how does it compare to the original PSP, is it like the change from DS Phat to DS Lite, and should you run out and get one tomorrow? more…
Doctor, Doctor..
I think while GamerDad is recuperating (please read this if you haven’t already), I’ll taunt him by only making posts with a doctor, hospital, or surgery theme.
Nah, it’s coincidence, honest. I just wanted to highlight a little site called Vista Game Doctor which aims to ease your Vista gaming pains. more…
Dream Games
One of the fun things about video games are the imaginative worlds you get to explore. And for me, for some reason, when those worlds are labeled ‘dream worlds’ or just dreams, then it really fascinates me. Granted, I guess you can say that all video game worlds are dream worlds since someone had to dream them up. I think what intrigues me about dream worlds in video games is that when I sleep, I have some pretty vivid dreams. Most of the time they seem very real, so much so that when I wake up, I feel a bit disoriented for a second or two. I won’t go into some of the weird and crazy dreams I have, but I bet that if I wrote some of them down, I could write a really cool book or storyline for a video game! So since I’ve been thinking about this sort of thing lately, I figured I’d make a little blog listing some of my most notable played games that have dream worlds in them.
Not Too Kool for (High) School (Musical)
I like the whole High School Musical franchise. There – I said it.
I liked High School Musical in spite of my general disdain for pop culture and particularly pop music and despite the fact that it meets my expectations of a plot-lite and predictable romp full of cliches and cardboard scenarios that you knew would all work out just like last week’s crime drama. more…
Another ‘little guy’ is gone
Many of us who hang around here are parents watching our kids grow up with a cornucopia of video games and systems that offer an amazing breadth of experiences. Many of us grew up in a time when games and other software created by ‘two guys in a garage’ was actually feasible – and much of the best stuff was created by very small teams. In more recent years niche genres such as PC RPG’s have been served to a larger extent by developers who are not much more than one or two people with some cool ideas and rudimentary technology. They do it as a sideline and sustain themselves on goodwill and a sense of serving a community rather than on hard cash. Today another one of those small developers has decided to call it quits.
What have I been playing lately? 9/09/07
I’ve gotten a lot of cheap games lately so I thought I’d briefly give my impressions of what I’ve been playing.
In dreams begin responsibilities
I know we’ve been a bit quiet for a few days, but behind the scenes there’s a whirlwind of activity. You can look forward to a couple of new features here on the blog and perhaps over at GamerDad.com too. Eyes peeled and all that.
Anyway, being so busy is actually what has led me to this post. I’m somewhat embarrassed to admit it, but I sometimes put gaming too high on my task list. How many of you can admit to the same?
The Mini-Games of Turn it Around
In my never-ending quest to bring you information on games you might not otherwise hear about, here’s a blog about a new DS game called Turn it Around.
