Stardust Galaxy Warriors: Stellar Climax (Switch, PS4, Xbox One, PC)

Stardust Galaxy Warriors: Stellar Climax (what a cool title) is a horizontally scrolling classic styled 2-D shooter for up to four players.  Choose a flying mech and a gun and shoot anything that moves and avoid projectiles.  And that’s all there is to it, really.  It’s available to download on most current consoles and PC, but reviewed on Switch here.

There are four modes of play.  The main campaign is pretty much the story mode, and features a bit of dialogue before each area from some 2-D anime characters, but since you don’t see them in the actual game often, they don’t really have much impact.  In each mode you start off by picking your mech and their weapon.  These include different guns that have various styles of firepower.  Then you just play a traditional 2-D shooter.  Get hit too many times and your shields will deplete and you’ll explode.  When that happens, you’ll have to start that area over again.

The controls for this shooter are a little unconventional, but they work well once you learn them.  The L and R buttons turn on your rapid fire guns and missiles, and you press them again to turn them off.  This was weird at first but it makes sense to do that since you always want to be firing.  The X button activates a shield that can bounce back bullets for a second or two, and the Y button makes you swing a sword to defeat nearby enemies.  I only wish that I would’ve been able to pull up a short tutorial before playing, but once I figured out everything, it was all good.

In the story mode, between levels you can choose an upgrade.  These include higher defense and attack power, the ability to pull power-ups toward you, faster shield regeneration, and much more.  And at the end of each world you can buy more in a shop.  The other three modes in the game include two different arcade modes, with and without selectable upgrades.  And a challenge mode where you can play special stages.  They even had a holiday themed level around Christmastime!

Aside from the lack of instructions, the only other problems I had with the game were that it gets pretty difficult, even on the easy setting.  And sometimes it’s hard to know what is and isn’t in the background, especially when it comes to asteroids.  But other than that, this is still a fun simple little arcade styled shooter with fun gameplay and rockin’ music (wish this game had a sound test).

Kid Factor:

Stardust Galaxy Warriors: Stellar Climax is rated E for Everyone with an ESRB descriptor of Mild Fantasy Violence.  You shoot spaceships and robots that explode, and that’s pretty much it.  Reading skill is helpful for the text, but not necessary just to play.  Younger gamers may get frustrated at the high challenge level, but luckily they can get another player to help them.  And the whole family can enjoy the game together since it’s a multiplayer game for up to four players!
