Fingun (Switch, PC)

Fingun is a silly and quirky Japanese style horizontal shooter.  You control a gloved hand pointed in the shape of a gun (think Master Hand from Smash Bros.) as you fire bullets at crazy bosses.  It kind of reminds me of a mix of WarioWare and Sexy Parodius.  It’s available on Switch and PC, but reviewed on Switch here.

Each stage is just a boss fight, but these are some of the craziest boss fights in a shooting game.  You will battle against a giant lady shaking her stuff on a beach, a girl dressed as a tanuki, a huge mushroom with a human foot, a daruma doll, and many more!  You just move around and hold the button to fire.  Each boss has several phases and when you shoot off a piece of its ‘armor,’ you’ll get a power up like more bullets at once, rotating ‘option’ shots, and more.  When you defeat the boss you’ll move onto the next.  Lose three lives and it’s Game Over.

The game has several modes.  “Play” is the main one where you can choose a Training stage to show you how to play, Normal Mode where you start from the beginning, choose levels you’ve beaten in Level Select, or customize how you want your gun, shields, and mini-guns to look like as you play.  You can also toggle options in Settings, view unlocked artwork in the Gallery, view your Challenges (think Achievements), and watch the credits.

The main problem I had with this game is that it’s a bit too hard, but it does get a little easier as you progress and get more power-ups.  You also seem to get more continues the farther you get, but it only goes so far paired with the difficulty.  Also the game gets a bit too saucy for my tastes, but we’ll get to that in a minute.  If this game had a difficulty selection, I think I’d like it better.

Kid Factor:

Fingun is rated M for Mature with ESRB descriptors of Language and Sexual Content.  I didn’t really notice any bad language, but there sure is a lot of sexual content.  In the game, you shoot off armor from many cartoony anime ladies, but panties, bubbles, or bandages cover up the naughty bits.  But some of the pictures you can unlock in the gallery certainly have nudity in them.  I didn’t think that kind of stuff was even allowed in a video game, but I don’t really play too many M rated games so maybe that’s why.  At any rate, because of that this game is for grown-ups only.
