Rage Among the Stars (PS4, PS5, Switch)

A little gray alien has crash landed on a mysterious planet and now must survive the most taxing and challenging 2-D platformer levels ever!  Yeah this is one of those rage inducing games where you die several times per level.  It’s available on PlayStation consoles and Switch, but reviewed on PS4 here.

Your little alien can jump, double jump, and hop up walls like Mega Man X.  You’ll use these skills in precision platforming levels as you avoid spikes, pitfalls, and other obstacles as just one hit can kill you.  Sometimes you’ll meet a hooded figure who might give you clues, or a giant rock alien thing that’ll give you a hard time by either giving chase or throwing rocks at you.  You can earn medals in each level depending how fast you complete it.  And that’s pretty much it.

I’m not a big fan of these types of games, but I can at least appreciate them if the controls are spot on.  But here, climbing walls feels a bit loose and hit detection feels a little off, so sometimes you’ll die even if you’re sure you really didn’t hit that spike.  But if you want a challenge and enjoy games like Super Meat Boy, then you may want to check this one out.

Kid Factor:

Rage Against the Stars is rated E for Everyone with an ESRB descriptor of Mild Fantasy Violence.  When you get hit, you just dissolve into pixels, so violence is minimal.  Reading skill is helpful for some of the text, and younger gamers may find this one too difficult.
