Wake Up, Lia! (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S, PC)

Help little girl Lia wake up from nightmares involving avoiding sawblades in this 2D precision platformer.  It’s available on all current consoles and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here.

Lia can run and jump and that’s it.  If you get hit by a sawblade or other obstacles like spikes, you’ll have to start the stage over or at the last checkpoint.  Usually in these types of games, you should avoid skulls, but here they act as checkpoints and colored skulls can even open doors of the same hue.  Make it to the end of the level and you can move onto the next.  And that’s really it.  Honesty I can think of many other better 2D precision platformers you could be playing besides this one.

Kid Factor:

Wake Up, Lia is rated T for Teen with ESRB descriptors of Blood and Violence.  You can get hit by saws and spikes, so there’s the violence.  When you get hit, blood splats on the screen and stays on the spikes.  But luckily you can turn the blood off, which just makes it look like your character turns into confetti after being hit.  But either way, it still seems awfully unsettling considering you are controlling a little girl.  There are bits of text between each level that explain why she’s having these nightmares, but it really didn’t grab me.  Between all that and the spooky music and atmosphere, this one is definitely not for kids.
