King of Ping Pong MEGAMIX (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S, PC)

I’ve never been a big fan of tennis or ping pong video games, because they just seem like glorified Pong games to me.  But this one has arcade style gameplay and wacky characters, so let’s see how this one fares for me.  King of Ping Pong MEGAMIX is available on all current consoles and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here.

Ping Pong is already pretty simple, but this one’s even more basic than you might think.  You can move your paddle to the middle or left and right, and press one of three buttons to lob it left, right, or in the middle.  You must try not to miss and whoever makes it to a certain point threshold wins.  There are all sorts of wacky character opponents with special moves to keep you on your toes.  I don’t know if you get any special moves because the game’s instructions are very poor.  At the beginning they flashed a screen with text on how to play, and I think I might’ve pressed the wrong button before I could read all the pages, and they wouldn’t let me go back and review it.

You can play arcade mode where you challenge each opponent or do a tournament mode.  You can also unlock rackets, too.  There’s also stats, a glossary, and a gallery to view.  Of course, I really can’t tell you about any of the modes because the game is too darn hard.  I couldn’t get past the first opponent.  I know I’m not very good at tennis, ping pong, or just plain old Pong games, but come on.  The difficulty and lack of good instructions turned me off of this one pretty quickly.

Kid Factor:

King of Ping Pong MEGAMIX is rated E for Everyone with an ESRB descriptor of Mild Fantasy Violence.  You can hit other opponents with a ping pong ball and that’s it.  Reading skill is helpful for the text, and younger gamers may find it too difficult.
