Bomb Kitten (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S)

Help a mischievous looking kitten use dynamite to blow up blocks and enemies in a grid-like playfield in Bomb Kitten.  If this looks and sounds like Bomberman, well, you wouldn’t be blamed for thinking that.  Except this game takes out everything that made Bomberman fun.  You’ll see what I mean by reading this review.  Anyway, Bomb Kitten is available on all current consoles but reviewed on PS4 here.

Your kitten can move in four directions with the D-pad on a 2D overhead perspective playfield.  Press the button to lay down dynamite.  You’ll need to get away before it explodes because if you get caught in the explosion, you’ll have to start the stage over.  You’ll also lose if you hit an enemy or spikes.  Luckily the game will show you the blast radius before the bomb goes off.  Your goal is to make it to the exit, but sometimes you’ll have to blow up enemies, blocks, and switches blocking your way. You can also pick up fruit and other items for bonus points. There are 50 levels in all.

The bad thing is that they took away what made Bomberman fun: the power-ups.  So for the whole game, you can only lay one stick of dynamite at a time and the blast radius is always the smallest area.  So you can’t chain explosions or lay multiple bombs or anything like that.  Heck, even the NES version of Bomberman is more fun than this.  Also the game is super short and can be beaten in about an hour or so.  Maybe younger players might enjoy this, but anyone else should just stick to Bomberman.

Kid Factor:

Bomb Kitten is rated E for Everyone with an ESRB descriptor of Mild Fantasy Violence.  If you or an enemy gets caught in an explosion or hits something dangerous, you just disappear and start over and that’s it.  Reading skill isn’t needed either.
