Hextreme Void (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S, PC)
Mixing a Breakout/Arkanoid style game with a roguelike may sound like a good idea, but the way they did it here is very passive, so I’m not so sure. Anyway, that’s kind of what Hextreme Void is like, and it’s available on all current consoles and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here.
So when you start the game, you’ll see a bunch of blocks in a hexagonal formation. Then a bunch of balls comes out and starts bouncing around and breaking them. When you get enough points, you can choose a perk like more balls, higher attack power, point and coin multipliers, ball speed increases, and more. Then you go back to watching the balls bounce around. When you clear a stage you get coins. After the time runs out and it’s Game Over, you can use the coins to buy permanent upgrades so you can try and get further next time. And that’s pretty much it.
I don’t understand how this is even a game. Feels more like an interactive screen saver to me. All you have control of is what perks to choose. You don’t control anything else, just watch the balls bounce around. And even though the game is simple, I would’ve liked to have some instructions to help answer some questions. Like what do the colored blocks do? Why does the trail on your balls change color sometimes? I have no idea. Hopefully someone will come along and make a better roguelike with Arkanoid style gameplay.
Kid Factor:
Nothing violent or objectionable here. Reading skill is helpful for the text, though. I would say kids would get bored with this, but after seeing some of the stuff my nephew likes to watch on YouTube, maybe not. Hextreme Void is rated E for Everyone.
