Elementallis (Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, X/S, PC)

The 16-bit Super Nintendo is my favorite game console, and one of my favorite genres on that console were top down action RPGs.  These include obvious ones like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, as well as more obscure ones, like Soul Blazer.  So when I heard about Elementallis, which takes major cues from 16-bit classics like A Link to the Past, I was all into reviewing that!  So in this game, you live in a world inhabited by elementals.  Your parents were elementalists who could control the elements, but they got greedy and started ransacking the sacred temples.  Now that you are old enough, you befriend a floating elemental creature and go off on the quest to undo the wrongs of your parents.  You’ll explore a big overworld and tackle dungeon mazes, acquiring elemental powers to help you defeat enemies and solve puzzles.  The game is available on all current consoles and PC, but reviewed on Switch here.

In the game, you move around in all directions in top down fashion.  Use a button to swing your sword to defeat enemies, and other buttons to pick up objects or interact with signs and talk to people.  In each dungeon you’ll pick up a new element for your creature to use, and each one has different uses.  The fire element lets you shoot fireballs to burn plants.  The nature element will let you grow vines to climb, and water will encase you in a bubble to act as a shield and you can walk on water while inside. And there’s more to discover, too. You can also find other items to help you out and upgrade your equipment as well.

So yeah, this one plays A LOT like A Link to the Past.  So much so that I’m surprised Nintendo didn’t sue (you know how they’ve been nowadays).  One thing I have noticed, though, is that this game is a bit harder.  The enemies take a few more hits, puzzles are trickier, and secrets are more hidden.  But so far it’s still doable.  You’ll just die a bit more and need some patience.  Other than that, the only other problem I can see is that sometimes goals and objectives aren’t as clear as I’d like.  But otherwise, I’ve had a fun time adventuring in this game.

Kid Factor:

Elementallis is rated T for Teen with ESRB descriptors of Blood and Violence.  I haven’t really noticed any blood, but you do hit enemies with your sword and magic and they just disappear in a puff of smoke when defeated.  But because of the high level of reading skill needed and the difficulty, I’d say this one is best for older kids.
