Feist (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

FEIST_BOXFeist is a physics-based 2-D platform action game with puzzle elements.  You play as a little furry critter who has been captured by larger furry critters.  Now you must escape from your cage and survive a harsh forest wilderness where everything is out to get you.  The graphics look like everything is in shadows, similar to Limbo (though not near as scary).  Feist is available to download on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here.

Galaga Wars (iOS, Android, Google Play)

GALAGA_BOXI’m a huge fan of classic Namco arcade games, like Pac-Man, Galaga, Dig Dug, etc.  So when I saw a new Galaga game on my iPad and it was free to play, I just had to check it out and review it.  It’s available on iOS, Android, and Google Play, but reviewed on iPad here.

LEGO Dimensions Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Story Pack & Fun Pack

LEGOBEASTS1This past Fall, one of the big hit movies was Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which is based in the Harry Potter universe.  I actually saw it with my brother and his girlfriend in the theater, mainly so I could review this game better.  My brother and his girlfriend are big Harry Potter fans, so they really enjoyed the movie.  I’m not as big of a fan of Harry Potter, so I didn’t like it as much as they did.  However, I did enjoy playing out parts from the movie in LEGO form with the Fantastic Beasts Story Pack for LEGO Dimensions way more than watching the movie.  It’s available for nearly all the current game consoles, but reviewed on Wii U here.  This review covers both the Story Pack and Fun Pack.

Unplugged: HABA Games 2016

cliff cardAs a parent looking for games to play with my kids, I am always impressed at the quality and durability of titles from HABA.  With quality cardboard and wooden parts, they sometimes aren’t cheap (although these titles are relatively inexpensive) but components are first rate.  While my oldest child is now able to play more strategic games with dad, he still enjoys playing these when we get together for a family gaming moment with the entire family.  Here’s a few HABA games I’ve played in the past few months, starting with my favorites.

Hue (PS4, Vita, Xbox One, PC)

HUE_BOXHue is a 2-D platforming action puzzle game.  You play as Hue, a boy who finds himself in a colorless world.  After exploring for a bit, you’ll discover letters from a mysterious woman who has dabbled in some dangerous color experiments and has now made herself invisible.  It’s up to Hue to rescue her and solve the mystery.  Hue gains the power to change the background to several colors in the spectrum, which he uses to solve puzzles and bypass obstacles.  It’s kind of like a more puzzley version of Runbow.  Hue is available for the PS4, Vita, Xbox One, and PC, but reviewed on Vita here.

LEGO Dimensions Adventure Time Fun Pack (and Level Pack)

LEGOAT1Adventure Time is one of the most popular animated series on Cartoon Network, and there have been tons of games based on the franchise and I’ve reviewed most of them!  In fact, in the 20 plus years I’ve been reviewing games, out of all the licensed games I’ve reviewed, I’ve probably played more Adventure Time games than anything.  I don’t even really watch the show, I just know a lot about it from playing all the games!  And now they’re getting the blocky treatment in LEGO Dimensions.  Here are reviews of the Fun Pack and Level Pack from the series.  LEGO Dimensions is available for nearly all the current game consoles, but reviewed on Wii U here.

Reader Review: Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate (Vita)

SHIREN_BOXMy good friend Leroy Capasso has helped me review some games here at GamerDad.com in the past.  He also loves dungeon crawlers, so I figured he’d be best suited to review this one.  The Shiren the Wanderer series was one of the first to start the dungeon crawler craze, and if you like anything “Mystery Dungeon’ related, you’ll definitely want to check out his review her

Bethesda Pinball (PS3, PS4, Vita, Xbox One, 360, PC, iOS)

PINBALL_BOXGame publisher Bethesda has quite a few well-known properties and beloved franchises, and now you can play pinball tables based on three of their biggest games: Skyrim, Fallout, and Doom.  You can download and play the new Bethesda Pinball pack on consoles that support Zen Studios pinball platforms (reviewed on PS3 here). When you download Pinball FX 2 or Zen Pinball 2 (depending on which game console you own), you’re just downloading the hub.  It’s free, and then you purchase separate tables for play in the game.  Here are the three tables in Bethesda Pinball.

Unplugged: Holiday Guide 2016

It’s time once again for me to preach to the masses on the greatness of boardgaming. Nothing beats the social aspect of in-person gaming with friends. Last year’s run-down  remains a great list of recommended games. Here again are some great examples of boardgames to get you and your family gaming. You might not find all these titles at your local mega-mart but many can be found online or in a friendly local game store. Some may argue $50+ boardgames are expensive, but compare that to videogaming (and where multiple copies are required for multiplayer play) and the economics of boardgaming shows their true value. Good boardgames are timeless, just as good today as they will be years in the future. They will provide many more hours of entertainment than most video games. In that vein, feel free to delve into some past year’s guides for 2014, 2013, or 2012.

For each game I’ve provided the number of players, an approximate MSRP (you might find it lower), and expected time for one game.

LEGO Dimensions Sonic the Hedgehog Level Pack

LEGOSONIC1Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most influential and popular video game characters of all time.  Now he’s making his mark in LEGO Dimensions with the Sonic the Hedgehog Level Pack.  And his special LEGO level is almost better than some of the recent Sonic games released lately.  Well, maybe.  You’ll just have to read on to find out!  LEGO Dimensions is available for nearly all the current game consoles, but reviewed on Wii U here.
