Game Review: The Magic Obelisk (WiiWare)

OBELISK_BOXMeet Lukus. He may look like just a little boy, but Lukus is actually a tree spirit. It’s every tree spirit’s dream to take root somewhere special and become a tree. If sunlight touches Lukus, he’ll turn into a tree, so tree spirits must walk behind shadows until they find the perfect spot. That’s why every tree spirit is also accompanied by a light spirit, who can shine and cast shadows on magic obelisk pillars to grant them safe passage from place to place. Play as Lukus’ light spirit Popo as you guide young Lukus in The Magic Obelisk, a downloadable action puzzler on WiiWare.

Game Review: The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces (Wii)

SKY_BOXThe Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces is an arcade dogfight simulation game for the Wii. It’s also based on a Japanese anime cartoon movie. The film is set in an alternate reality where there are no wars, so companies stage fake battles to keep the peace. A new breed of pilots is now being used to fly the planes: genetically engineered kids who never age. Yeah it doesn’t make any sense to me either. But hey, neither do most other anime cartoons. All you really need to know is that the team behind Namco Bandai’s Ace Combat series worked on this game, so this is essentially Ace Combat on the Wii. And trust me, that’s a GOOD thing!

Game Review: Divinity 2: Ego Draconis (PC, Xbox 360)

DIVINITY_BOXDivinity 2: Ego Draconis is the sequel to the cult classic PC RPG Divine Divinity that came out a few years back. In the sequel, choose to be a male or female Dragon Slayer, and customize your appearance and voice. Straight out of the Academy, you spend the first hour of the game in a special town to get initiated as a Dragon Slayer in a mystic ceremony. Then choose your profession as a sword master, archer, or mage (you can master all the skills later). But prematurely into your initiation, reports of dragons have appeared in another village, so you’re whisked away only to have a run-in with evil forces which transform you into the very thing you’re trying to kill—a dragon. Now as a warrior who can change into a dragon, you’re charged with saving the land from the returning evil lord Damien in this action RPG for PC and Xbox 360 (360 version reviewed here).

Game Review: Squeeballs Party (Wii, DS)

SQUEE_BOXSqueeballs are fictional living plush toys (think Madballs from the 80’s only much less disgusting), and they are manufactured and produced on a far off island. Before they can be shipped off to toy stores around the world, Squeeballs must go through some rigorous testing. In Squeeballs Party (Wii version reviewed here), YOU are the tester and must toss, squish, and splat these little guys in this mini-game collection for the Wii and DS.

Game Review: Gratuitous Space Battles (PC)

Gratuitous_Space_Battles.TitleThe name says it all. This is a quality budget title that takes an idea and breaks it down into its core gameplay, making that gameplay all it can be. You’re presented with a battle against an alien fleet. Given limited resources (basically cash and a number of pilots), put together a fleet of ships to challenge the aliens. Once you’ve assembled your fleet and given them the barest of strategy advice, hit the play button, sit back, and watch the battle unfold in all its glory. Don’t look for any plot here, Gratuitous Space Battles is a fun little diversion for anyone who likes smashing things together to see how they hold up.

Guest Review: Chaotic: Shadow Warriors (PS3)

CHAOTIC_BOXChaotic: Shadow Warriors is a popular trading card game and TV cartoon show, and now it’s a video game for all the major consoles (PS3 version reviewed here). For this review, though, I enlisted the help of kid Chaotic expert James Young to write the majority of the review. Read on for his take on the game:

Game Review: LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues (Wii, 360, PS3, PS2)

Lego Indy Jones 2.boxUnlike Reese’s Peanut Butter cups, where chocolate and peanut butter go great together, video games and popular movie franchises rarely combine to make something good. Perhaps it is the addition of one more ingredient, LEGOs, but the LEGO series of video games based off of Star Wars, Batman, and Indiana Jones continue to prove popular both with gamers and critics. The newest release is a revisit to Indiana Jones. While it might not be the best game of the series so far, it is more than enough of a game to recommend highly for fans of exploration games with enough puzzles to interest older gamers and gameplay safe enough for anyone in your family.
