NCAA All-Play

Being a game reviewer – particularly one on the sports beat – the arrival of NCAA College Football in the mailbox means that Summer is halfway done and Fall is around the corner. Not cheery really, but that’s okay, especially if you’re a football fan. Since Madden, the official start of the Football season for many, comes out on Tuesday, lets check out the college version now.  For now, here’s the content review. Go Badgers.

Review: Civilization Revolution (DS)

When Caltech student Walter Bright used a stack of punchcards and a mainframe computer to program one of the first turn-based strategy games, little did he know the long legacy of the genre that followed from that initial game of Empire. Over a decade later, Sid Meier created the crowning jewel of the genre, Civilization – chosen by Computer Gaming World in as the best computer game of all time. Fast forward to 2008, and you can now play Civilization in a portable format via your Nintendo DS!

Order Up!

Another cooking game for the Wii? Yep, only this time there’s a more Western personality and sensibility, a lot more humor, and the difference between cooking with mama in the kitchen and satisfying a horde of hungry restaurant patrons. I’d give the game a solid 4 out of 5 and recommend it for kids 8+ but must warn that the frustration level is high with this one. WhatTheyPlay let me write about it, so here’s the content review. Bon Appetite!

Nancy Drew: The Phantom of Venice

Nancy’s back, and so are the mysterious forces of intrigue that make her America’s number one teen sleuth. Nancy Drew: The Phantom of Venice is her 18th computer adventure and this time she’s in Venice seeking to unmask a catburgler fond of ancient, and priceless, artifacts. Second Opinion – Boom Blox (Wii)

Boom BloxWhen Bloom Blox was reviewed last month by GamerDad, it piqued my interest. I decided it might be just the kind of Wii game I appreciate. I went and got a copy to see for myself. The solo game play is interesting but not compelling but the game shines as a party game. It is the best pick-up-and-play party game for larger crowds of tweens and teens since the original Wii Sports pack-in that comes with the system.

Summer Gaming – Lego Indiana Jones (Wii)

Summer is a time for blockbuster movies, and one of the big hopefuls this past summer was a new Indiana Jones sequel.  Hot on the heels of the new movie, Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures, is the latest videogame in the family friendly Lego adventure series.  So many movies turned video games fail to deliver, but LucasArts once again shows that Legos plus action movie theme equals some great gaming.

iPhone = DS/PSP Killer

The iPhone debuted at $600, I got one for about $400 (two, if you count GamerMoms), and now the newer, sleeker, faster, cooler version is roughly $200. The iPod Touch uses the same software and Apple just posted numbers suggesting that its music store is outselling Wal*Mart. And on top of all this – now iPhone’s got game. So much game in fact, Sony and even mighty Nintendo should be scared….

Game Review: Tamagotchi Connection: Corner Shop 3 (DS)

Those Tamagotchi virtual pets are hopping out of their keychains and onto the Nintendo DS. Shops are open and back in business for the third time as young (and young at heart) gamers play occupation-based mini-games to make their Tamagotchi customers happy.

Summer Gaming – Lost Odyssey (Xbox 360)

Good old summertime, a time to relax and enjoy a slightly slower pace. So why does it seem nearly as busy as the rest of the year? I’ve finally had a chance to catch up with a few of this year’s crop of game releases and thought I’d share my thoughts. The first one is a doozy: Lost Odyssey – a 40+ hour epic RPG on the Xbox 360.
