Unplugged: Patch Products (Kid’s Games & Toys)

mytouch screenI like a nice, deep boardgame: something fun to play that would last 60-90 minutes. However, with two young boys and a toddler girl I am always on the lookout for games and toys appropriate for my younger crowd. Patch Products have none of the former, but specializes in games and toys for the younger (or family with younger) crowd. Scoping out things for the holiday season, here are three newer items of note from the company. They aren’t going to collect awards as grown-up games, but all three were a big hit with my kids.

It Was a Good Day Amiibo Hunting

AMIIBO_LOGOA few weeks ago, Nintendo released their latest batch of Amiibo figures. And thanks to a family member, I was able to get all the ones I wanted from that set. So I thought I’d showcase them here, as well as some that I imported that I figured would be hard to get otherwise.

Unplugged: Cinelinx

CINELINX_BOXCinelinx is a card party game for 2-6 players. It says on the box that this game is for people who love movies. And that’s definitely true. The object of the game is to connect cards together that have something in common, and all the cards are film genres, titles, and movie stars. Whoever can connect all their cards and get rid of their hand first, wins!

Cary’s Top Five Favorite D.I.Y. Games!

WARIOI’ve been enjoying Super Mario Maker for the Wii U lately. It’s a new game that lets you create your own 2-D Mario levels, and share and play them with friends online! It’s a lot of fun, and it got me to thinking about my other favorite “make your own game…games.” So here’s a list of my top five, plus some honorable mentions.

Mario Kart Fruit Snacks

MARIOKART1Now in grocery stores you can find Mario Kart Fruit Snacks! But don’t let the “NEW” label on the box fool you. These are actually the exact same fruit snacks I wrote about a few years ago, just with different packaging. But we’ll take a look at these anyway, just because that’s just how I am.

Unplugged: Cardline: Dinosaurs

CardlineDinos boxWhich is larger, a tricerotops or an ankylosaurus?  If you already know, you may be in the target audience of Cardline: Dinosaurs.  The Timeline family of card games challenges players to place cards representing items and events in chronological order.  In Cardline: Dinosaurs, players place their cards in order either by weight or by size.  While similar to the previous games, the dinosaur theme may be more attractive to younger players.

GEICOThe last day of the show was not as eventful for me because I only had one meeting and I was flying out that night to go back home. So for this final article we’re just going to wrap things up and take a look at a few of the cosplay pictures I took.

PAX Prime 2015: Day 1: Crafty Beginnings

MINECRAFT3The Penny Arcade Expo, or PAX for short, is a video game convention open to the public. Video game developers show off their upcoming line-up to gamers, so it’s kind of like a mini-E3. There is a PAX convention in Boston, Australia, and a new one earlier this year that I went to in San Antonio, TX called PAX South. But the original one that started it all is in Seattle, so it’s called PAX Prime. This past weekend I attended PAX Prime, so for the rest of the week, I’ll be posting articles and pictures of what I did there. So we’ll get started with the first day of the show! And forgive me for not covering ALL the games shown at PAX. I’m only one person and can’t do it all!

Unplugged: Legacy-style Games

pandemic legacy boxSit down to a boardgame with your friends and enjoy a night of fun. Next week you can play it all again, but what if each time you play the game it is subtly altered so you never play the same game twice? About 4 years ago, Hasbro went out on a limb and released Risk Legacy. It was the Risk game known to many, but this time around every game played physically changed the game. What if the green army wins one game and comes back with advantages the next time around. What if western Australia was nuked, a sticker was placed on the board, and that location will never be accessible again. Risk Legacy was a hit amongst the boardgaming crowd. The idea of a boardgame that evolves and permanently changes was out of the bag and now several new titles are coming down the pipeline.
