GamerDad and family Welcome to GamerDad: Gaming with Children. My name is Andrew S. Bub - the GamerDad - and I've been writing about videogames, movies, and children for over 15 years now. After working as a magazine journalist, I switched gears to write about how media violence affects children, educating parents about them, and working closely with magazines, newspapers, major retailers and even politicians. GamerDad is an internationally recognized expert in this field. Games, movies and media are fun, kids and families love them, they aren't going away. So join me in cutting through the hype and lets have a real conversation about the things that matter: Video Games, Violent Media, and their supposed effect on children and families.

Sonic Sno Cones and Spoons at Bahama Buck’s

Sonic the Hedgehog is really getting around at eating establishments this year!  First it was IHOP, now Bahama Buck’s, a snow cone place.  A while back, my mom and stepdad came out to visit, and when they left, they stopped by Bahama Buck’s on the way out.  I didn’t go with them because I don’t like snow cones.  Too syrupy sweet for me.  Anyway, it’s too bad I didn’t go because they had a Sonic promotion at the time.  Luckily they took pictures for me and got everything they could, so here’s some pictures and info and things.  I’m not sure if the promotion is still going on as of this writing (probably not), as it’s hard to keep up with these things.

Retro Revengers (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S, PC)

I really don’t keep up with the game streaming business, but apparently it’s very popular.  Some streamers even have their own characters and products and stuff.  Such is the case with a group of streamers in Japan that I’ve never heard of, but now they have their own game with Retro Revengers.  Play as the characters from the streaming videos in a retro styled 2D platformer.  But really what sold me on this game was that the music was done by the same composer who did the tunes for Mega Man and Shovel Knight (the music isn’t as good here, but you can tell that’s who did it at least).  Anyway, Retro Revengers is available on all current consoles and PC, but reviewed on Switch here.

The Mini-Games of Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble

I’ve been a big fan of the Super Monkey Ball games ever since the GameCube ones and the original arcade game (which was called just Monkey Ball and the joystick was a banana you had to hold…kind of embarrassing).  The series is still going strong today and SEGA recently released Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble on Switch.  So I though I’d do a little review of it and go over the mini-games and even talk about what’s in the “Legendary Banana Edition” you can get at launch.  So let’s roll!

Fit My Dog (Switch)

First there were cats, then zoo animals, and now dogs.  In Fit My Dog, you must arrange canines of varying shapes onto a bed so they can take a nap together.  It reminds me of those tanogram puzzles and is available on Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo World Championships NES Edition Deluxe Set

Recently Nintendo released Nintendo World Championships NES Edition on the Switch.  It’s more or less very similar to the NES Remix games on the Wii U and 3DS, except with more of a focus on speedrunning.  I was able to get the Deluxe Set, so I wanted to show off what’s in there.  Plus this’ll be a little review of the game, too.  I was really glad to get the Deluxe Set of this game because I attended the first Nintendo World Championships back in 1990 when it was in Dallas.  I even wrote an article about it almost ten years ago, and I encourage you to follow the link and read that one, too, so you’ll know just how special that was to me.  And after you’ve read that, come back here and check out what’s in the Deluxe Set of the Nintendo World Championships NES Edition!

Super Woden GP 2 (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S, PC)

Top down viewed racing games have always been a staple in arcades and consoles, with titles like Super Sprint, World Rally, Micro Machines, RC Pro-Am, Drift Out, and many more.  And now there’s the sequel to Super Woden GP, which I reviewed a couple of years ago.  The newest installment is available on all current consoles and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here.

Chili’s BurgerTime (PC, Mobile)

I love BurgerTime, it’s one of my favorite arcade games.  It’s one of the few games that could pull me away from Pac-Man when I was a kid.  Other games in the arcade that could do that were Dig Dug, Q*bert, and Pengo.  So when I found out that Chili’s restaurant was doing a promotion where you could play a version of BurgerTime to promote their Big Smasher Burger, I was intrigued.  You could even win a contest where if you get a high score on the game, you could win burgers for life.  I also read somewhere that you could also win a full size BurgerTime arcade machine, but I’m not sure if that’s true or not.  In order to win, you had to sign up for their mailing list, so I didn’t want to do that.  Unfortunately, by the time you read this, the contest may be over.  I wish that when restaurant chains would do promotions, they’d make them last longer.  Going out to eat is so expensive anymore, that I don’t get to do it as often.  So by the time I can plan to go, the promotions are usually over.  But I still wanted to write an article about it anyway because I thought it was interesting and I really like BurgerTime.
