Welcome to GamerDad: Gaming with Children. My name is Andrew S. Bub - the GamerDad - and I've been writing about videogames, movies, and children for over 15 years now. After working as a magazine journalist, I switched gears to write about how media violence affects children, educating parents about them, and working closely with magazines, newspapers, major retailers and even politicians. GamerDad is an internationally recognized expert in this field. Games, movies and media are fun, kids and families love them, they aren't going away. So join me in cutting through the hype and lets have a real conversation about the things that matter: Video Games, Violent Media, and their supposed effect on children and families.

Zumba Fitness Core (Wii, 360)
It’s getting to be that time of year again. Gotta watch out for all that Halloween candy, Thanksgiving pumpkin pie, and Christmas cookies that can plump up your belly! But you can help turn the tides in the battle of the bulge with Zumba Fitness Core for Wii and Xbox 360 (Wii version reviewed here). It’s the first fitness game to target a specific area of your body: the core area and abs.
I’m a (Silly) Fighter
Recently I reviewed Dead or Alive 5. Whenever I play a fighting game that has characters in it that are kind of cool, I like to write a blog featuring all the characters in that game. So we’ll do it with Dead or Alive 5. But be warned, this blog is silly!
Dead or Alive 5 (PS3, 360)
One of the most popular fighting game franchises is back. Dead or Alive 5 for PS3 and Xbox 360 (PS3 version reviewed here) has all your favorite characters, moves, and other paraphernalia that makes the series so famous. While I’ve never played a previous game in the series, I can tell that this is one quality fighter, although it’s best enjoyed by pros of the genre only because of the high challenge level.
BreakQuest: Extra Evolution (PS Minis)
BreakQuest: Extra Evolution is a brick-busting paddle and ball game that dares to think outside the ‘blocks.’ Similar to classics like BreakOut and Arkanoid, move your paddle left and right on the bottom of the screen, ricocheting a ball to hit all the breakable objects in the level. Catch falling power-ups (and avoid power-downs), that fall when you break certain objects or take a long time in a stage. If you let the ball fall to the bottom of the screen, you’ll lose a life. Lose all balls and it’s Game Over.
Retro City Rampage (PS3, Vita, PC, 360, WiiWare)
Retro City Rampage is a love letter and parody of everything 8-bit. In the first five minutes of the game, you’ll see spoofs of Mega Man 2, Duck Hunt, Mario 2, and Frogger. Later on you’ll spot other parodies of Metal Gear, Bionic Commando, Skate or Die, Paperboy, and probably more that you might miss if you blink. Even the graphics and sound are designed to look like an 8-bit NES game. Anyone remember the first two Grand Theft Auto games that were 2-D and viewed from a top down perspective? That’s what this game plays like. Retro City Rampage is a downloadable title available for PS3, Vita, and PC, and later on Xbox 360 and WiiWare (PS3 version reviewed here).
NiGHTS Into Dreams HD Remake (360, PS3)
Rewind back to 1996. I had just finished my first year of college and started writing game reviews for a large metropolitan newspaper, which helped me decide on my major. Nintendo was about to rock the world with Super Mario 64, and people were beginning to use something called the “World Wide Web” to send “e-mails” on the PC. This was the world when NiGHTS was released for the SEGA Saturn. It was a beloved game by many a SEGA fan, and now you have the chance to play (or replay) an HD remake, downloadable on your 360 or PS3 (360 version reviewed here).
The Games of the Journey Collector’s Edition (PS3)
No, this is not a game about the popular 80’s band Journey (although they did have an arcade game back then, true story). This is a collection of games created by thatgamecompany, a developer who has made a few popular downloadable games for the PS3. From what I’ve seen, their games tend to me more artistic, goalless games that are more about the experience, not the challenge, of gaming. But I just like game collections, so in this blog, we’re going to go over what you can find on here.
Cosmo Camp: Picnic Problems (iPad)
Cosmo Camp: Picnic Problems is an interactive storybook for parents and preschoolers to read along together, downloadable for the iPad. Join Migo the polar bear and Pandy the panda, two space travelling friends who explore the galaxy in their space camper. When they land on a peaceful planet for a rest, they meet a new friend, Tanny, and deal with a pesky rain shower that keeps ruining their picnic!
Space Disorder (iPad)
Strap on your jetpack and get ready to blast off with Space Disorder, a new 2-D action game for iOS devices (iPad version reviewed here). Play as a heroic astronaut as you explore randomly generated space stations. Avoid dangerous lasers, rogue robots, and other obstacles as you collect items, power-ups, and coins, not to mention rescue lots of aliens!
