GamerDad and family Welcome to GamerDad: Gaming with Children. My name is Andrew S. Bub - the GamerDad - and I've been writing about videogames, movies, and children for over 15 years now. After working as a magazine journalist, I switched gears to write about how media violence affects children, educating parents about them, and working closely with magazines, newspapers, major retailers and even politicians. GamerDad is an internationally recognized expert in this field. Games, movies and media are fun, kids and families love them, they aren't going away. So join me in cutting through the hype and lets have a real conversation about the things that matter: Video Games, Violent Media, and their supposed effect on children and families.

We Love Wario Ware!

warioWell I got a DSi last weekend, and as a big fan of the WarioWare series, one of the first things I did was use my free points to download WarioWare Snapped. So in honor of this occasion, here’s a tribute blog of all things WarioWare. I think I probably did this kind of blog before when the Wii WarioWare game was released, but that was more than two years ago so we’ll revisit this again.

State of the Heart 4/09: Kids Alright?

I have to admit I’m still shaken. A good 3/4 of last year was spent in considerable pain and that did affect me. My bigger worry is how the kids are doing. I’m wasting my time though, school counselors, teachers and Linda say they’re fine. I know my daughter has some demons though, how could she not? She almost lost her dad at 7 (which is even more disturbing when you consider that Linda lost her dad at 6). I figure, that’s gotta leave a mark. We’ll keep watching, from a distance so as not to alarm, to make sure the kids feel safe, secure, and that daddy won’t get sick again.

Cary’s Easter Blog

easterEaster is on its way soon, and it’s one of my favorite holidays. As a Christian, I think Jesus’ resurrection is reason enough to celebrate. But you know what? I like the secular parts of Easter and I think they’re a lot of fun, too! (Sorry folks, I’m aiming for this to be a fun blog, so I’m not looking to start any religion vs. secular Easter arguments). I love the candy and Easter egg decorating and such. And Easter shares a part in video game history, too! How so? Hop to it like the Easter Bunny and read on to find out:

This Week in Games: April 5 – 11

dsiWell, it is pretty much impossible to ignore the fact that the big release this week isn’t software, but hardware. This morning the newest member of the Nintendo DS franchise launches – the DSi! Featuring dual camers, larger screens, slimmer styling, and an all-new DSi Store. There are several mini-games released in the DSi Store today, as well as the WarioWare collection. Were it not for the DSi I would call this the ‘week of the PC’! Aside from the multi-platform Godfather II and Chronicles of Riddick, the PC gets an excellent turn-based strategy game Elven Legacy and another expansion to the excellent Company of Heroes franchise. There is plenty to go around this week, so check out the list! more…

Game & Watch Collection (DS)

gw_boxDon’t worry, this isn’t a retrospective of ALL Nintendo handheld game systems. That would take too long! (and require research, eww) This past week I got my Club Nintendo exclusive Game & Watch Collection on the DS, and I also attended a sneak preview of the DSi (also through Club Nintendo). So in honor of that, I thought I’d share my personal experiences with the Game & Watch games, do a quick review of the G&W Collection I got, and finish up with my impressions of the upcoming Nintendo DSi at the preview event I went to (in part two below this first blog).

Nintendo DSi Hands-On Preview

clubAside from getting the rare exclusive Game &Watch Collection, another perk of being a Platinum member of Club Nintendo is that I was recently invited to attend a special preview of the upcoming Nintendo DSi console. Since this wasn’t a press event, and my time playing the DSi was limited, my hands on preview may not be as thorough as some other Web site DSi previews.

GamerTalk: Halo 3

Comments Off on GamerTalk: Halo 3

halo3GamerDad is a blog and one thing I hadn’t anticipated given the nature of blogs is how a post from the past can become really popular. Responses pile up, observations are made. Why not join this conversation? It’s about Halo 3 and why it should be rated T-Teen in my opinion.
