Marblelous Animals (iOS, Android)

Animals worldwide are turning into round fat versions of themselves, and it’s up to you to roll them into holes in mazes.  The game doesn’t explain HOW the animals became that way, but the press release I got says it’s because of their fast food diet.  This free to download game for mobile devices (reviewed on iPad here) plays like those marble maze games where you must tilt the maze to get the marble where it needs to be.

Each maze has a hole and you must tilt the mobile device to get one or more animals into it.  Collect coins along the way to use in the shop to unlock more roly poly animals for you to use.  Depending on how fast you get the animals in the holes, and how many coins you collect, you can earn stars, three per level.  You’ll want to collect as many as you can because that’s how you unlock new worlds.  If all your animals fall of the edges of the maze, you must start the level over again.

The problem with the game is the controls.  You use the gyroscopic sensor in your mobile device to tilt the maze, but it doesn’t seem responsive enough and loses calibration quickly.  You can tap on an icon on the bottom of the screen to recalibrate, but that doesn’t seem to help matters as it’ll quickly make your ball roll away as you center the screen again.  Plus the mazes get very hard, very quickly.

Kid Factor:

Other than fat animals falling off of ledges, the game is non-violent.  When you unlock a new animal, you can view it and read up on some interesting facts on that animal, so the game could be considered slightly educational as well.  Reading skill is helpful for some of the text, but not necessary just to play.  Younger gamers may get frustrated with the controls, and parental supervision is recommended for the in-game ads and purchases.
