Angry Birds at TopGolf

TopGolf is a chain of high tech golf driving ranges.  You reserve a spot and can use these clubs (or bring your own), and you can scan your club to eject golf balls from a machine.  Then you swing and hit the ball and try to get it to go into big holes on the playfield for points.  I’m not totally sure how it works, but there are trackers in the ball so you can see the ball’s trajectory on a TV screen after you hit it.  A dumb way to describe it is that it’s kind of like bowling, but it’s golf.  Anyway, TopGolf has teamed up with Angry Birds for a new mode of play you can try.  There’s actually a TopGolf in the same city where I live, so I went there a few months ago to test it out, and I finally got a chance to write about how it works.

First of all, here’s a picture of the driving range so you can see what it looks like.

We were there after it turned dark as well, so here’s what it looks like at night.

I like how lit up the front of the building looks at night, so I took a picture of that, too.

And don’t worry, we took all the COVID precautions and wore masks and social distanced and all that crap.

Anyway, so when you pick the Angry Birds mode instead of the regular one, you swing the ball and view the trajectory of it on screen and try to knock down structures and those green piggies.  You get three tries and are rated on how many hits it takes for you to knock things down and how much you do knock down.  It’s a lot like the game, really.  Unfortunately it uses art and assets from the Angry Birds movies, but oh well.  Here are a couple of screenshots.

Since I’ve tried both the Angry Birds mode and the regular TopGolf mode, I can say that if you have any younger golfers with you when you go to TopGolf, the Angry Birds mode may be good to try with them since it’s easier.  But if you want a challenge, there are multiple difficulty levels and stages, too.

I’ve never actually played REAL golf before, just mini-golf.  So I thought I’d be terrible at this.  But to my surprise, I won first place both times we played the first visit.  Here’s pictures for proof.

We went a second time more recently and I didn’t do as well unfortunately.  But at least I did well the first time!

They also serve food at TopGolf.  They didn’t any food tie-ins with Angry Birds except you could get some Angry Birds sauce to go with your food.  It was just a mix of siracha and something else.  It was all right.

And that’s all of that!  It’s fun, but kind of pricey.  Glad I got to try it, though.  Wouldn’t it be cool if they did a Mario Golf tie-in at TopGolf?  I imagine the licensing costs for that would be too expensive.  Have you ever been to TopGolf?  Let me know what you think in the comments section!  Later!  –Cary
