Reader Review: Bad Apple Wars (Vita)
A few months ago, I reviewed a visual novel game from Aksys and didn’t fare too well. So when they sent me another one, I decided to let my brother Benjamin Woodham review it. So here’s his take on Bad Apple Wars for Vita.
LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 (PS4, Switch, Xbox One, PC)
The evil Kang has conquered time and space and is bringing Marvel universes from different time periods together to create one big city called Chonopolis. Now modern day Manhattan is next door to Asgard, Roaring 20’s Manhattan (complete in black and white), 2099 Nuevo York, and even an alternate timeline New York where Hydra has taken over. It’s utter chaos and it’s up to Marvel superheroes from different time periods to team up and save the day! You’ll play as classic Marvel characters like Spider-Man, She-Hulk, Doctor Strange, Thor, and more, as well as meet up with alternate timeline versions of characters like Cowboy Captain America in the Wild West and Spider-Gwen. It’s the wackiest LEGO super hero adventure yet! LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 is available for nearly all current game consoles, but reviewed on PS4 here.
Just Dance 2018 (PS4, Switch, Wii U, Wii, PS3, Xbox One, 360)
The Just Dance series of games is one of the more popular console dance music games out there. So much so that there’s a new yearly release annually, and it’s time for the 2018 version to hit with more songs and other goodies. It’s available for nearly all current game consoles, but reviewed on PS4 here.
Rapala Fishing Pro Series (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
NASCAR Heat 2 (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
NASCAR is one of the most popular racing sports in the US, and there have been tons of video games based on the franchise. The newest one is NASCAR Heat 2. I haven’t played the first one, so I don’t know what improvements are in the sequel, but it’s available for PS4, Xbox One, and PC (reviewed on PS4 here).
Deer Hunter: Reloaded (PS4, Xbox One, PC, Mobile)
One of the biggest successes in gaming that you don’t hear about much anymore is Deer Hunter. Back in the late 90’s, this game was huge and I reviewed a ton of its sequels and imitators back at The Dallas Morning News. In fact, there were so many hunting games back then that I had to tell my editor to stop sending them to me, because I was getting tired of reviewing them! And you know I hate turning down a game to review! Heck, even my grandmother on my dad’s side played the Deer Hunter games back then. And she was really good at them, too, and got the highest scores in our family! And now Deer Hunter is back with Reloaded, available on the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and mobile devices (reviewed on PS4 here).
The Mummy Demastered (PS4, Switch, Xbox One, PC)
The Mummy is one of Universal Studios’ most popular movie franchises. There have been several sequels and spinoffs, a ride at their theme parks, and I think there was even a cartoon at one point. Recently they’ve remade the movie and WayForward published a game based on it called The Mummy Demastered. The reason for that title is because they made the game to look like a movie tie-in from the 16-bit era, and it’s available to download for nearly all the current game consoles and PC (reviewed on PS4 here). It’s a 2-D platforming run and gun exploration type of game, similar to Metroid. With all those good things going for it, could anything go wrong? You’ll just have to read on to find out!
Spelunker Party! (Switch)
Spelunker was an 8-bit 2-D platformer game where you explored caves, avoided obstacles, and gathered treasures. It came out in the US, but gained more popularity in Japan, probably because it was one of those easy to play yet hard to master games, and it came out when the Famicom (Japanese NES) was big. You can even find Spelunker references in other Japanese media, like anime cartoons and video games like Taiko no Tatsujin (Taiko Drum Master). There’s even been a few remakes and rereleases of the game, and I’ve reviewed a few of them. Such as Spelunker HD, which was one of the first games I reviewed on the PS3, and Everyday Spelunker, a mobile version of the original game. Now cave exploring is back as a downloadable title on the Switch with Spelunker Party!
Brawlhalla (PS4, PC)
Over the past year or two, there’s been a free-to-play fighting game that’s taken the PC world by storm. I know because I’ve seen it at recent PAX shows I’ve been to. And now it’s available on PS4 and Steam as well! All are still free-to-play and supposedly cross-platform online as well. Brawhalla is a cartoony four player fighting game that resembles Super Smash Bros. quite a bit (reviewed on PS4 here).
Semispheres (Switch, PS4, PSVita, PC)
Try to simultaneously maneuver an orange sphere and a blue sphere to their respective exits in the puzzle-like game Semispheres. Most levels are a symmetric pair of boards, color coded to the spheres. Get both spheres to their own colored exit to solve the level. The standard relaxing music and lack of any time pressure combine to make a soothing puzzler suitable for on the go gaming.
