The idea of a deckbuilding game has been around for quite awhile, the idea of making a game solely about building a deck of powerful cards over the course of a single game. Designers have since “riffed” on that basic idea in many ways, and Hyperborea takes as its new twist the idea of bag-building. In Hyperborea, players place and remove colored cubes from their personal bag. The colors drawn dictate a player’s options for that turn. This new(ish) mechanism is used to good effect. Combined with unique player powers and multiple paths to victory, Hyperborea is a fun game that feels something mildly akin to Risk, but Risk where each player (and country) has special powers.

Lately I’ve been working on reviewing a lot of downloadable indie Wii U games lately. I’ve got four on my list right now, with a good possibility of more to come later. The Wii U has been doing a pretty good job of having a sizable list of indie games in their eShop roster lately. They’ve been a godsend since it’s getting harder and harder to review mainstream titles recently. And it got me to thinking about my favorite indie video game characters. So here’s a blog about that. Cary’s Best Games of 2015 SO FAR Awards Show!

Can you believe this year is already half over? What I like to do this time of year is write about the best games of the year 2015 so far. Everyone is all excited over the E3 announcements, and most of the really good titles come out during the Christmas season at the tail end of the year, and the games that come out earlier tend to be forgotten. So this is where those games get their due.

Well, another E3 has come and gone. Now it’s time for me to complain about not being able to go to E3 AGAIN this year. But the games they showed at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo were pretty neat, and still worth talking about, so here’s a blog all about that. Enjoy!
Adios, Amiibos?

So recently, Nintendo released another wave of their Amiibo figures. In the past, I was able to easily get all the Amiibo figures because I could reserve them at the nearby GameStop. But for this last wave, GameStop decided to change their reservation process and have it be all online. Even if you reserve them at the store. So now I had to compete with the entire country, not just one place. They WOULD have to do this on the wave that had the Amiibo I wanted most: Pac-Man! I thought my Amiibo collecting days were done, but thanks to the graciousness of a good friend of mine, he drove me around to a couple of stores on the morning that the new wave of Amiibo figures would be released. So I managed to get nearly all the ones I wanted! So here’s a blog about them. Will this be my last Amiibo blog? Well, I guess we’ll just have to see what the next wave brings. I would like to get Palutena, Zero Suit Samus, and Dr. Mario, and maybe catch up on exclusives like Meta Knight (not to mention upcoming Chibi Robo and Yarn Yoshi). But we’ll just have to see when that time comes!
Nintendo World Championships 1990

In the last weekend of May, Nintendo held a new Nintendo World Championships at Best Buy stores around the country. Participants played the championship mode on the 3DS NES Remix game, and winners will play in the finals in LA during the week of E3! You may have read about many people on the Internet getting all excited over all this. But why? What’s the big deal? Well, it’s because for people who grew up in the NES generation, the original Nintendo World Championships 1990 was such a monumental event for those who attended it. Including me. So in this blog, I’m going to share with you my experiences with that original event, and how it shaped me as a game reviewer today!
Mario’s Puzzling Games

One of the most popular mobile games right now is Puzzle & Dragons. In it, you match up symbols like in Bejeweled which turn into elemental attacks for fighting monsters. So it has a bit of a Puzzle Quest vibe to it, too. Puzzle & Dragons has many imitators, some of which I’ve even reviewed. Anyway, the cool thing is that Nintendo is going to be releasing a version of Puzzle & Dragons soon on the 3DS called Puzzle & Dragons Z. Best of all is it’ll also have a separate game: a version of Puzzle & Dragons starring Mario characters! That got me to thinking about how many other puzzle games feature Mario & friends, so here’s a blog about it!

Unplugged: Fantasy RPG Roundup

There seems to be an uptick in old-school computer RPGs lately, with Wasteland 2, Pillars of Eternity, and Torment: Tides of Numenera on the horizon. But it doesn’t get much more old-school than good old-fashioned paper and pencil role-playing. The classic Dungeons and Dragons had a recent “reset” with their 5th Edition rules, harkening back to older D&D versions with faster, looser play (less of a tactical boardgame feel.) The big launch last fall has simmered down and it’s time to take a look at the line to see how it’s matured. Both D&D and Pathfinder (the other big player on the market) continue to find ways to cater to less experienced players. We’ll start with new items from Pathfinder and D&D, and finish off with the newest D&D themed co-op boardgame, just released by Wizkids.
