Parting With Power
Last week, the gaming world received some sad news. Nintendo Power magazine will cease in December 2012. The magazine was a big part of my childhood, and after hearing that news, I wanted to write a blog about my favorite memories of that long-running magazine. I know putting up a blog this week isn’t as timely, but I have a lot of other things to do, like write game reviews and life in general. Plus I wanted some time to collect my thoughts. So here are some of my personal favorite memories of Nintendo Power!
Toad’s Top Ten Mario Power-Ups (Well, Actually Cary’s Top Ten)
I thought I’d do a Mario themed blog since a big new game in the series is being released around this time. I first thought about writing on my favorite Mario games and characters, but I just did that when Super Mario 3-D Land came out. And while I have no qualms in revisiting old blog topics, since that was done less than a year ago, I figured it would be too soon to do again. I also thought about doing my favorite Mario villains, but aside from Toad and Luigi, all my favorite Mario characters are bad guys anyway (Koopa Kids, Wario, Capt.Syrup, etc.). So we’ll do my favorite Mario power-ups instead. The best ones are the power-ups that can make or break how well you get through levels, so we’ll go through some of my favorites here. The list isn’t in any particular order or anything.
Extra Large August 3DS StreetPass Meetup for the North Dallas/Plano, TX Area!
It’s a little last minute, but we’re having another 3DS StreetPass Meetup in the North Dallas/Plano, TX area this Saturday, August 18. Same time and place as always. You can read more info about it here. This time, we MIGHT even get a special preview of the upcoming 3DS XL and New Super Mario Bros. 2. Maybe. I’ll take pictures and post them here if we do!
Just Dance With Chester Cheetah!
We all know Chester Cheetah as the mascot of Cheetos snacks. But did you know that he was created by one of the same folks who came up with the Pink Panther cartoon? Also, Chester Cheetah starred in TWO 16-bit 2-D platformer video games back in the day. I never played them myself, but I hear they weren’t very good. But now, Chester Cheetah is getting back into video games. Click here to read a snipped of a press release announcing that you’ll be able to download music tracks for UbiSoft’s popular Just Dance music games. And when Just Dance 4 comes out later this year, it looks like Chester might be in the game, too! Ha! Isn’t that ‘cheesy?’

Cary’s Best Video Games of the Year 2012 SO FAR Awards Show!
Welcome ladies and gentlemen, to the “Cary’s Best Video Games of the Year 2012 SO FAR Awards Show!” I’m your host for this ceremony, with guest stars like Cammy, Pac-Man, Maya the ghost, Tepig, Tails, Pascal, Asha, and Taki (well, not really, but every awards show needs celebrity guests). Can you believe the year is already half over? At this time of year, I like to honor the best games that have been released in the first half of the year. Why? Well, the best games usually tend to be released during the second part of the year, due to the holiday season and all. So the games released during the first six months sometimes tend to be forgotten. So this is their chance to shine. Now, keep in mind that this is MY list only. No other outside opinions contributed. And since I’m only one person, I can’t play ALL the games out there, so some of your favorites might have been missed. So without further ado, here’s my awards show!
Online Boardgaming – Live!
OK, there are all those online tournaments that promote huge fan bases watching people play for thousands of dollars. I’m never going to be one of those people. However, I do get my moment in the sun…
Yes, my favorite hobby, boardgaming, has reached that next level – whatever that is. Thursday evening (Tomorrow – June 28th) at 7:30pm EST, Northstar Games will be hosting a live video feed promoting their new edition of Wits & Wagers. They’ve recruited big names from all over the boardgame blogosphere, and myself for some reason, for a live competition of the new Wits & Wagers Party. Read on for details and the link…
Game Genres I Don’t Like (and what it would take to get me to play them)
Ever since I read about a NES strategy game called Nobunaga’s Ambition in a Nintendo Power as a kid, I have never had a desire to play the series. It just looked totally un-fun to me. I mean, who would ever want to play that, I thought to myself. Well apparently it’s very popular as the series is still strong to this day. But I swore I’d never buy it. Until last week, when I did. What caused me to buy a Nobunaga’s Ambition game? Well, they put Pokemon in it! Yup, Pokemon Conquest is one of the weirdest crossover games I’ve ever played. Warlords from feudal Japan paired up with Pokemon? Yeah, I had to try that. But it got me to thinking about other game genres I really don’t like, and what it would take to get me to play them. So I wrote a blog about it!
