Cary and Jeff’s PAX Adventures (Day 1)

PAX, or Penny Arcade Expo, is a three-day video game convention open to the public. It was started by the folks who made the Penny Arcade Web comic. They have two a year, one in Boston and one in Seattle. This last weekend was the PAX in Seattle. As I’ve done now for four years, I went to the show in Seattle and this time I brought along my brother Jeff and we had a lot of fun! So here’s a three-part picture blog of all the stuff we did there!

Cary’s Fall Forecast: Sunny With a Chance of PAX!

Man, August has been a S-L-O-W month for games! I hardly reviewed anything new this month! But looking forward into the fall season, starting around my birthday, there are tons of games coming out in time for the holidays. So I figured I’d write a blog about the ones I’m looking forward to playing and reviewing.

GenCon 2011 Report

Mayfair.Catan Plushies.GenCon.2011 2011-08-03 010 (Small)Since I’m nearly local, I make an annual journey down to Indianapolis once a year to visit GenCon, one of the largest gaming conventions in the U.S., and one of the most important for board game and role playing game fans.  This year, my family conveniently scheduled a reunion for the same weekend but I still managed to attend for the first day of the convention.  What follows is a small excerpt of some of the more interesting games I came across.  For details on some more obscure titles, visit my photo-centric overview over at the blog Opinionated Gamers.

Batman Arkham Revisited

Batman Arkham Asylum is one of the best games ever made, period. I knew that while playing it and while voting for it in various Game of the Year articles. I’m very excited about Arkham City. I knew I wanted more. But absence, time, and mediocre games can dull the memory a bit and I decided to do something I almost never, and never really could, do. I’m playing a game a second time.

Super Mario Fruit Snacks

So we were at the grocery store today and I saw this: Super Mario fruit snacks. Of course I had to buy them. You know you’re popular when you get your own fruit snacks. So let’s take a look at what these are.

Heavy Rain (isn’t gonna fall)

Should I keep playing Heavy Rain? I’m not far in. I just completed the PI’s first investigation – should I continue?

Pokemon Toys in McDonald’s Happy Meals!

Just a heads up for all you Pokemon fans (and parents of little Pokemaniacs). McDonalds currently has Pokemon toys in their Happy Meals. You get a Pokemon figure and a card for the trading card game based on the critters from the recent Pokemon Black & White game. I don’t know what all the characters are, but I hope that one of them is the piggy! You can check out more here. Oink!

Graduation Congratulations!

Last weekend, right when I got back from E3, my brother Jeff graduated high school. That’s a huge milestone, so in honor of his accomplishment, here’s a blog about video games that we’ve enjoyed playing together over the years.

LA Noire

Rockstar Games, the company so rich and powerful they feel they can add an “e” to the end of a perfectly good French word like “Noir” just because they feel like it, has done it again. Redefined the action/adventure sandbox game. The game is amazing and one I will remember fondly for a long time but LA Noire is a flawed gem. After a torturous development process, Rockstar polished it up and shipped it out and created what amounts to a faithfully noir police procedural hampered by an ill-executed overarching story. CSI was the direction to go, because the crime is the thing.

E3-Time Packin’, Packin’ in the E3 (Time)

The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) is coming up soon, and I’ll be going this year! Yay! So I’ve been thinking about what I need to pack and bring with me. Going to E3 isn’t like a regular trip where you can just throw some clothes in a suitcase and go. I’ve been going to E3 for several years now, and I’ve collected quite a few handy tips on what to bring and do at the show. So I thought I’d share some with you in blog form. These tips are also good for other big gaming conventions, like PAX. And this blog will serve double duty as my own personal packing checklist. Ha ha! Oh, and if you can get the reference in my title, you win a solid.
