You’ve Given Me a GTA Headache
JARED, A “DAD” ASKS: My 9 year old son wants grand theft auto iv or grand theft auto ballad of gay tony for xbox 360. I want to know if the game is so bad for my son. I let him play games like x-men origins wolverine uncaged and prototype and saw and halo 3 and left 4 dead and call of duty. Also I got him gta chinatown wars for his dsi and he tells me its not bad. My son always tells me that it’s not bad it’s all fake. I take him to see movies like the friday the 13th remake and halloween 2 and watchmen and zombieland and my bloody valentine. Would the gta games be so bad for him?
Reading Early Bright
I believe strongly in helping my fellow authors and I believe even more strongly if the book in question is from an author I knew back in College (and whom I thought was cute) and I’m in a position to help. I will help. This is a parent/game site and this book has nothing to do with, still, consider finding a copy of Ami Silber’s Early Bright. The more they sell, the more likely we’ll hear from this author again. Go, buy one, read it, GamerDad asked you as a favor! Read on for a review – not by me:
Happy 7th Birthday Henry Bub!
Henry Bub, the fabulous GamerBoy, is having his golden birthday today! A basketball, loads of Legos, Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga DS, Lego Rock Band 360, a remote control truck and Mario Hoops 3-on-3 DS! It’s his GOLDEN Birthday and we’re going to have fun today! Later we might bring the Xbox 360 up and I’ll give him a crack at Burnout Paradise with the Steering Wheel! Happy Birthday my son, I’ve loved you since the moment I caught you with my two hands!
GamerDad & Family Circle
Andrew Bub, The GamerDad, is featured in the current issue (March 2010) of Family Circle magazine – that one that you find in every doctor and dentist nationwide (that’s just a joke, their circulation outside places of sickness is ENORMOUS). Check it out in the magazine now!
Crispy Gamer – Burned to a Crisp
I always hated the name. Apparently it’s slang for “cool” somewhere but I work with Kids and Teens, and nobody says “Crispy.” Still, I’m going to remember that name for a long time. And remember it fondly. CrispyGamer.com was an independent voice in game journalism – a rare thing. They refused game ads and staffed themselves with the very best video game journalists in the business. I was honored to be asked to join their GAME TRUST and I launched a Political and Parenting column for them, as well as doing a few reviews. Since this was right after my heart attack the timing was terrible and after a year – we parted ways. I’ve always regretted that and a part of me always figured they’d be there when I was finally ready to come back. Well, it didn’t happen soon enough because CrispyGamer.com and all it’s talented staff and freelancers are now out in the cold. I’m hoping other sites pick up the editorial slack and hire some of these unique voices – but I’m not betting on it. Crispy Gamer, take it from GamerDad – You died way too young. Full details in this excellent article by Harold Goldberg that illustrates just what we’ve lost – the site was more than just a faux hip name. It was a rare island of real journalism in the sea of mediocrity that is, too often, game journalism.
Happy Birthday Linda!
Today is Linda’s mmph birthday! Yes, she’s mmph years old! So, Henry, Maggie and I celebrate her today with gifts, kisses, hugs and some more adult things. We all owe her everything. Everything and more! Love you baby!

ESRB Stats for 2009
The Electronic Software Ratings Board is the ratings system for games. Just like movies. An E rating = PG, An E-10 is a cross between PG and PG-13, a T is PG-13, and an M is rated R. Have you noticed how most people who dont understand video games – yet willfully pretend to will tell you that the game industry is targeting kids with their M-rated garbage? They claim that the industry is vile. Turns out they couldn’t be more wrong. Bear in mind the following stats reflect games submitted and RATED by the ESRB – not games based on sales. Here’s the stats:
Cary is Looking Forward in 2010
Well let’s see. I’ve done a “Best Games of 2009” blog. I’ve done a “Best Games of the Past Decade” blog. So now I guess I’ll do a blog about games in 2010 that I’m looking forward to.
New Year
A new Year! Hey, thanks Cary for your recent “Picks of ’09” and of the decade. I’m working on something similar but with a twist. Soon I’ll post an article outlining how gaming went mainstream. I saw it coming, I saw how it would come, I tracked the highlights and even pushed the ball up the hill a bit. (I mangled metaphors too.) What I mean is, I saw it all from a unique perspective and I helped make it happen (in a tiny but meaningful ways). Expect that soon. Other than that the reason my “Game of the Year ’09” picks isn’t up yet is because NBC/Universal’s iVillage (one of the biggest “mommy” websites on the web) bought the article! Also, catch my picture and some advice in the March issue of Family Circle Magazine. Yes, I’ll be known to millions of people seeing the doctor all across this great land… Resolutions? No resolutions here. I’ve tried to make it a habit to change and perfect myself in small ways all the time (and fail, just like annual resolutions).
