GamerDad and family Welcome to GamerDad: Gaming with Children. My name is Andrew S. Bub - the GamerDad - and I've been writing about videogames, movies, and children for over 15 years now. After working as a magazine journalist, I switched gears to write about how media violence affects children, educating parents about them, and working closely with magazines, newspapers, major retailers and even politicians. GamerDad is an internationally recognized expert in this field. Games, movies and media are fun, kids and families love them, they aren't going away. So join me in cutting through the hype and lets have a real conversation about the things that matter: Video Games, Violent Media, and their supposed effect on children and families.

G.P. the Gamer Puppet Unboxes the Collector’s Edition of Soul Calibur V

Hi there! I’m G.P., the Gamer Puppet! GamingWithChildren.com reviewer Cary Woodham just bought the Collector’s Edition of the new 3-D fighter Soul Calibur V, and he asked ME to “unbox” it and show you all the cool stuff you get! So let’s take a look!

Puddle (Xbox 360)

Puddle is your typical “tilt the world around to move a body of liquid” action puzzle game (downloadable on Xbox 360). Use the L and R trigger buttons to shift the world left and right to avoid obstacles and make sure enough of your liquid reaches the exit. You’ll travel through various creative levels, including plumbing pipes, a plant nursery, chemistry lab, and even inside the human body! It’s similar to games like Sony’s Loco Roco, Nintendo’s Fluidity, or like a 2-D version of Mercury.

Scarygirl (Xbox 360, PS3)

Based on a graphic novel I’ve never heard of, Scarygirl is now a downloadable video game on Xbox LIVE and coming soon to PSN (360 version reviewed here). In the game, a young girl with a tentacle for an arm was abandoned, but a friendly octopus took her in and named her Scarygirl. Blister the octopus clothed her with outfits he found under the sea, so she dresses like a pirate. He even built a nice house for her. But when Scarygirl keeps having prophetic dreams, a guru bunny tells her to go on a journey. Now you can help Scarygirl on a 2-D platforming adventure!

New Year, New Game Unboxing Puppet!

Have you ever had an idea that you wanted to try, but lacked the time and/or knowledge to pull it off? But you decided to make do with what you have and try your best anyway to make it happen? Well that’s what I’ve been kind of doing over the past year with my game ‘unboxing’ articles. You see, I’ve seen many videos of people unboxing new games, showing off everything that comes with a collector’s edition and whatnot. Well, I thought it would be fun to do that, too, but instead of having me do the unboxing, I thought it would be fun to have a puppet do it! Just to be different. But I don’t have a video camera and I don’t have time to make a YouTube account, but I do have a digital camera and I do have a place where I can write articles, so I decided to start with that.

The Crazy Characters of King of Fighters XIII

Well folks, it’s time for my  King of Fighters XIII blog.  We’re mostly going to look at the different characters in the game, but I’ll warn you right now that this’ll be a pretty silly blog with my crazy observations about all the characters. I didn’t feel like doing too much research on them, so it’ll mostly be whatever thoughts go around my crazy head as I played the game. So think of this as an inside look as to all the silly thoughts that run through my head when I play one of these kinds of games.

Choplifter HD (Xbox 360, PS3)

Ahh, Choplifter. You and I go waaaay back. A lot of people think Choplifter started out as a Sega arcade title, but I remember playing it before that, on our first computer: an Apple ][+. This PC version of Choplifter was all black and white, and I was only about kindergarten age so it was a little hard for me to wrap my little head around some of the more complex helicopter controls (it wasn’t really that complex, though). But I did get the basic idea of the gameplay: pilot a helicopter from left to right and rescue little people on the ground while blowing up tanks and planes. Just don’t shoot the little houses the people lived in! Now, nearly 30 years later, you can relive this classic in high-def with Choplifter HD, a downloadable title on PSN and Xbox LIVE (360 version reviewed here).

Cary’s Pretend Zelda Orchestra Concert

I am a little sad today. Do you want to know why I’m sad? I’m sad today because there is a Legend of Zelda orchestra concert tonight here in Dallas near where I live, and I can’t go. I asked to be put on the mailing list and notified when tickets would be on sale, and since I’ve been to concerts in Dallas before, I always get newsletters and emails, too. But I was not notified about the Zelda concert until after it was already sold out! I have a couple of friends who were not notified either, even though they signed up to be told as well. So it makes me think they had some sort of special ticket pre-sell and didn’t tell anyone. That happens sometimes, even though it shouldn’t.

Champagne Toad!

We had champagne for my father’s birthday and, casually, I picked up the cork and showed it to my son Henry (GamerBoy, age 8 ) and said: “Looks kind of like Toad, huh?”  He smiled and pocketed it.  Toad is a character from his favorite games, the Mario ones, and yesterday he surprised me by creating this with no help from anyone. Awesome, huh?

3DS Ambassador GBA Games

A few months ago I wrote a blog about the ten free 3DS Ambassador NES games. Now I’m going to do the same with the ten GBA ones. It’s a bit late, I know, but lots of stuff has been going on in the last few weeks! So let’s get started!
