GamerDad and family Welcome to GamerDad: Gaming with Children. My name is Andrew S. Bub - the GamerDad - and I've been writing about videogames, movies, and children for over 15 years now. After working as a magazine journalist, I switched gears to write about how media violence affects children, educating parents about them, and working closely with magazines, newspapers, major retailers and even politicians. GamerDad is an internationally recognized expert in this field. Games, movies and media are fun, kids and families love them, they aren't going away. So join me in cutting through the hype and lets have a real conversation about the things that matter: Video Games, Violent Media, and their supposed effect on children and families.

LA Noire

Rockstar Games, the company so rich and powerful they feel they can add an “e” to the end of a perfectly good French word like “Noir” just because they feel like it, has done it again. Redefined the action/adventure sandbox game. The game is amazing and one I will remember fondly for a long time but LA Noire is a flawed gem. After a torturous development process, Rockstar polished it up and shipped it out and created what amounts to a faithfully noir police procedural hampered by an ill-executed overarching story. CSI was the direction to go, because the crime is the thing.

Cary’s Return to E3: Day 3

On the last day of E3, I just had a few last minute meetings and things to do, so this blog will have more miscellaneous pictures and stuff. Plus we’ll take a look at the Video Game History Museum. And we’ll have a “Silly E3 Booth Lady Contest,” and I’ll name my “E3 Best of Show.” Wanna find out the winners? Well you’ll just have to click to read more!

Cary’s Return to E3: Day 2

OK Activision, you send me this little Spyro figure a few days before E3 and tell me to bring it with me? Oh great, another thing to have to remember to pack! Ha ha! Just joking! I didn’t mind bringing it with me. So what’s the significance of this little Spyro toy? Well you’ll just have to read day two of my E3 adventures to find out, and see what other games I played in the South Hall!

Cary’s Return to E3: Day 1

Well another E3 has come and gone. The Electronic Entertainment Expo is the largest trade show for the video game industry, and since I went this year, here’s my coverage of it! Now, I’m going to do things a bit differently for my articles. Most of the hardcore gaming sites out there have already covered the popular and mainstream games. But I never see any coverage of some of the smaller games and family-friendly titles. So since that’s where my interests lie, and since this site is called GamingWithChildren.com, that’s what I’m going to cover. Plus I’m only one person, so I can’t cover ALL the games! So if you want to read about Modern Warfare 3 or Halo 4, you might want to go elsewhere. But click here if you want to know more about some of the family friendly titles shown you may have missed during the E3 frenzy. (of course, every now and then I might cover a T or M rated game) So here’s Day 1 of my E3 adventures!

Game Review: BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II (3DS, PSP)

Now you can enjoy Aksys Games’ flagship fighting game sequel on the go with BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II on PSP and 3DS (PSP version reviewed here). The title is a bit misleading as it’s not really a sequel to Continuum Shift on the big consoles. Instead, it’s the same game with a few new features, game modes, and characters only available as DLC in the console versions.

E3-Time Packin’, Packin’ in the E3 (Time)

The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) is coming up soon, and I’ll be going this year! Yay! So I’ve been thinking about what I need to pack and bring with me. Going to E3 isn’t like a regular trip where you can just throw some clothes in a suitcase and go. I’ve been going to E3 for several years now, and I’ve collected quite a few handy tips on what to bring and do at the show. So I thought I’d share some with you in blog form. These tips are also good for other big gaming conventions, like PAX. And this blog will serve double duty as my own personal packing checklist. Ha ha! Oh, and if you can get the reference in my title, you win a solid.

FYI

Hey all!  Just popping in to promise that I am planning on posting about LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean (Henry and I are on the third movie/episode already and the game is really fantastic), Portal 2 (love it love it love it) and most importantly the incredible LA Noire. That one needs writing because it’s very mature, in the true sense of the term.   I’m mainly here to say: “Yes, the GamerDad.com email isn’t working.” and “No, this isn’t because I lost the domain or am abandoning the site” and “don’t worry, it happened because I’m forgetful and finding it hard to go back 8 years and remember just who I bought the domain from, the passwords, etc., It’ll happen, until then please use “TheGamerDad @ gmail.com” no spaces. As far as my general lack of attention to this site? Well that’s a combination of new health issues (yay!) and my focusing on parenting, landscaping, and trying to get my book done finally. That’s about it. Until later, check LA Noire on Youtube and ask yourself if bloody and totally naked crime victims (as well as every other descriptor) is okay for your kids (hey, crime is crime and the game doesn’t pull a single punch), get LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean, and by all means get Portal 2 for yourself. Happy GamerDadding.

Cary’s Gaming Update 5/23

Well since it’s been so long since I posted anything here, I thought I’d write a blog just to let you all know I’m still alive and fill you in on what I’ve been up to lately. I haven’t written a game review in a while. It’s just such a SLOW time right now as far as game releases go. I think it’s just because E3 is right around the corner, so game companies aren’t going to announce anything or release anything new for a while.

Game Review: Marvel Pinball Fantastic Four (360, PS3)

A new Marvel table has popped up on Pinball FX 2. The Fantastic Four board will be available this week on Xbox LIVE, and a little later on for PS3 Zen Pinball on PSN (360 version reviewed here). Join your four favorite heroes, The Thing, The Human Torch, Invisible Woman, and that stretchy guy (sorry, can’t remember his name) as they battle Dr. Doom and even Galactus on the pinball field (hey the only reason why I know these names is from playing Marvel vs. Capcom 3).

Game Review: DodoGo! Robo (DSiWare)

In DodoGo! Robo, a new downloadable game for DSiWare, it’s your job to safely guide some robot dodo eggs to a finish line in each level. These eggs will continue hopping and rolling and will only turn around when they hit a wall, so it’s a bit like Lemmings, really. Using the DS stylus, you’ll draw planks, springs, and other tools to keep your eggs safe.
