GamerDad and family Welcome to GamerDad: Gaming with Children. My name is Andrew S. Bub - the GamerDad - and I've been writing about videogames, movies, and children for over 15 years now. After working as a magazine journalist, I switched gears to write about how media violence affects children, educating parents about them, and working closely with magazines, newspapers, major retailers and even politicians. GamerDad is an internationally recognized expert in this field. Games, movies and media are fun, kids and families love them, they aren't going away. So join me in cutting through the hype and lets have a real conversation about the things that matter: Video Games, Violent Media, and their supposed effect on children and families.

Just Cause 2

THOM asks: Hi GamerDad,  Any chance you will be reviewing Just Cause 2 soon ?  My son is turning 13 and asking for this one.  I see it may have some sex content and language and violence, but he has already been playing Call of Duty 4 and Battlefield Bad Company 2, so not so worried about the violence.  Honestly it is hard to articulate what worries me about it, but I would rather not have him role playing with too much “F” language, or emphasis on sex themes or drugs. You probably get this all the time, so thanks very much in advance if by any chance you decide you can provide any sort of reply.

Game Review: Mimana Iyar Chronicle (PSP)

IVAR_BOXIn Mimana Iyar Chronicle, an action-RPG for the PSP, play as Crais, a young guild knight. Crais is broke and down on his luck after gambling too much, and he’s a bit of a jerk, too. Luckily, a young girl soon hires Crais through the guild to be her bodyguard as they search the world for seven magical gems. In typical RPG fashion, they’ll meet up with other rag-tag adventurers and magicians who will join them as they end up saving the world in the process.

Portal

cube3“This is a triumph!” I have a few holes in my game knowledge, but I did play Portal a bit when it came out – you know, right after my massive heart episode. Anyway, the game didn’t mix well with Vicodin, so I played long enough to get that GLaDOS was hilarious and insane and that the game itself was a work of genius. Oh, I also fell in love with “I’m Still Alive” in Rock Band. Well, Portal 2 is coming and I decided to finally finish the first one. Actually, I started it over and for two days I became obsessed.

Catholics, Catholics, & Damned Catholics

18-jesus_w_childrenI’m mad as hell and I just can’t take it anymore. Forgive me for I know what I do and I’m going to do it anyway. I’m fed up. I normally don’t talk politics or religion here at GamerDad. I don’t want to offend. I want to be fair. Inclusive. PC….

New Club Nintendo Rewards Reviews!

GAME_BOXNintendo has an online program called Club Nintendo, where you can register your games and consoles and fill out surveys on what you purchased. It’s probably just a clever marketing ploy to get gamers to help Nintendo keep track of sales, feedback, and other numbers. But the good thing is that nearly everything you do there earns you coins. And you can spend those coins on rewards. Most of these rewards I don’t have any interest in. Mario stationery, game case holders, playing cards? Nah. But when it comes to exclusive games you can only get through Club Nintendo, then I’m totally interested! So here are two quick reviews on the newest Club Nintendo exclusive games: Game & Watch Collection 2 and Grill-Off With Ultra Hand.
