GamerDad and family Welcome to GamerDad: Gaming with Children. My name is Andrew S. Bub - the GamerDad - and I've been writing about videogames, movies, and children for over 15 years now. After working as a magazine journalist, I switched gears to write about how media violence affects children, educating parents about them, and working closely with magazines, newspapers, major retailers and even politicians. GamerDad is an internationally recognized expert in this field. Games, movies and media are fun, kids and families love them, they aren't going away. So join me in cutting through the hype and lets have a real conversation about the things that matter: Video Games, Violent Media, and their supposed effect on children and families.

GamerDad Family: Quotes

I mentioned doing something for the BBC earlier, what we had to do was speak into a minidisc player via a comically large radio microphone. We sat on the couch – I did not, repeat, did not – prepare the children and we started talking. Two takes later we’d convinced, mostly through threats of DS confiscation, that this was NOT a time to start making fart noises and laughing really loud.

Sorry, I couldn’t resist. The full name of the new Kirby DS game is just Kirby Super Star Ultra only. It’s a port of the Super Nintendo classic Kirby Super Star, and one of the best Kirby games ever made. Does it still hold up well on the DS more than ten years later? Read on and find out:

Mega Man 9: One Jump Forward, Two Slides Back

In honor of Mega Man 9 being released recently, I thought I’d share my opinions and experiences with past games in the original series, followed by my brief review of Mega Man 9. We’ll stick with the ORIGINAL Mega Man series, because if I went through the spin-offs (and spin-offs of spin-offs), this blog’ll be neverending. Oh, and you may want to sit down while reading what I have to say about MM9 (skip to the bottom). I’m going to make the whole Internet hate me.

Momgamer: Taking My Time

Take Your TimeI’m embarassed to report that I just finished Metal Gear Solid 4.

It’s not like I wasn’t ready to get in there and get going. I stood in line until midnight on June 12th, got it and my PS3 in my hot little hands, and booted it up for the first time that night. After many travails, I skipped sleeping and wrapped it up at 5am on August 18th. I invested a total of 19 hours of gametime and came out with the Panther rating.

Many of you are probably wondering exactly what the heck I was doing for two frickin’ months. Well, that’s what happens when you have to play a game 20 minutes at a time or only between 3 and 4 am. I run into this with a lot of games. I may get the game on Launch Day, but you can bet it won’t get finished anything like the timeframe most of the rest of the world considers standard.

You get 10 to 15 hours of gameplay from the original Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 as well as the sequel Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood. The games follow the true-to-life exploits of reluctant commanders Sergeant Baker and Sergeant Hartsock (respectively) as they fight their way through Normandy during the early days of the European invasion. Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway

“What is it that makes a great soldier? His brain or his heart?” Hell’s Highway, the new WWII stratey/shooter from Ubisoft (that’s not for children) tries to marry HBO’s Band of Brothers style “based on reality” drama while glorifying and reveling in gore and violence. Does it succeed? Crispy Gamer has my answer and you can read about the PC version, the one for Xbox 360, or the one for Playstation 3.

GamerDad & the BBC

BBC Radio contacted me earlier this month wanting to do a “citizen journalism” story on GamerDad. They sent a minidisc and I recorded close to a half hour of me, the kids, and GamerMom chatting about games and playing them. They want us to contribute some video and pictures and I’ll be sure to link to that when it all goes online. Ah yes, GamerDad, big in London town. Really, really big in old London town.

Read this book: Grand Theft Childhood

GamerDad has made an incredible list of books relevant to gamers and the gaming industry. Let me add another to that list: “Grand Theft Childhood: The Surprising Truth About Violent Video Games and What Parents Can Do” by researchers Lawrence Kutner and Cheryl K. Olson of Harvard Medical School.   Here is a book that (finally) takes a reasoned and rational look at video games and their potential impact on the attitudes and behaviors of our kids. more…
