PAX South 2015: Part 2: Costumed Crazies & Eager Beavers

CLAPTRAPAt PAX as well as other gaming and cartoon conventions, many people like to dress as their favorite characters.  So for Part 2 of my PAX South article, we’ll take a look at my favorite costumes that I was able to take a picture of (and could recognize who they were).  And we’ll also look at some other things I did around San Antonio when I wasn’t at PAX.  There’s a lot of stuff to do there in the city, too!

PAX South 2015: Part 1: Gaming in the Lone Star State

PAXSOUTHLOGOThe Penny Arcade Expo, or PAX for short, is one of the biggest gaming conventions open to the public.  It’s been around for a good while, but at first it was only limited to being in Seattle.  Over the past few years, that’s changed as there have been PAX conventions in Boston and even Australia!  And now, for the first time ever, they had a PAX South convention located in San Antonio, TX last weekend!  I live near Dallas, TX, so I thought that was cool that they had one so close to where I am!  Usually when I go to PAX in Seattle, I only bring one or two people with me.  But for PAX South, I had a whole crowd including both my parents, almost all of my little brothers, and a few of my good friends, too!  Keep reading to find out everything I did at the show last weekend!

Satellina (iPad)

SATELLINA_BOXSatellina is a touch screen game of skill available for download on iOS and Android devices (reviewed on iPad here).  In the game, you use your finger to run over green dots, but try to avoid yellow and red dots.  Once you’ve cleared all the green dots, the yellow dots turn green and the red dots turn yellow.  In this fashion, you must clear the whole screen of dots. It’s that simple!  If you touch a yellow or red dot, you’ll have to start the stage over again, so be careful!

The Princess Bride: The Official Game (iPad)

PRINCESS_BOXWow, it’s been a LONG time since I’ve seen The Princess Bride movie.  I don’t remember too much about it.  I know there were some funny lines and Andre the Giant was in it, but that’s about it.  I do know it’s since become a cult hit among fans, and I guess that’s why someone just now decided to make a game out of it.  The Princess Bride: The Official Game is a downloadable title for iOS devices, but reviewed on iPad here.

Area 777 (iPad)

AREA777_BOXAliens have invaded Las Vegas!  Actually I went to Vegas for real a few years ago and I’m pretty sure aliens have been there for a while!  Ha ha!  Anyway, in this free-to-play iOS game (reviewed on iPad here), play as Chazz Fabulous, a clueless, idiotic Vegas stage magician who receives sarcastic tips from his hapless assistant.  The only way to defeat these aliens is by…playing slots?!?  Yup, but while this is your typical slot machine game, it certainly held my interest a bit more than most, so let’s see why.

Cary’s Top Ten Favorite Guilty Gear Characters!

BAIKENRecently I played and reviewed the new PS3 fighting game Guilty Gear Xrd –SIGN–.  A lot of times when I play a new fighting game, I like to talk about the characters a bit.  So here’s a blog about my top ten favorite Guilty Gear characters.  Just a fair warning, though.  I was in a silly mood when I wrote this, and I usually like characters who are silly anyway so this blog will be a little goofy.  Plus I don’t have a whole lot of knowledge of the Guilty Gear franchise.  I’ve only played this new game and Guilty Gear Dust Strikers on the DS.  And the only reason why I got the DS version was because it was on sale and had silly little mini-games featuring some of the fighters.  I have watched some of my friends play the other Guilty Gear games, though.  And the characters I listed here aren’t in any particular order of preference.  So anyway, let’s begin!

Guilty Gear Xrd –SIGN– (PS3, PS4)

GUILTY_BOXNot really sure how you pronounce ‘Xrd’ or even what that means, but this is the newest in the Guilty Gear 2-D one-on-one fighter series.  It’s available for PS3 and PS4, but reviewed on PS3 here.  Just like other brawlers, pick your favorite anime-styled fighter and go against the computer or other players as you use fancy joystick movements and button combinations to perform outlandish moves to knock out your opponents.
