Bonkies (PS4, Switch, Xbox One, PC)

While it may sound like a breakfast cereal, Bonkies is actually a game where you help space monkeys build structures on distant planets.  Guide your monkey in a space suit as you fly around with a jetpack, picking up blocks with a special claw and putting them in the designated spots before time runs out.  Bonkies is available on most current game consoles and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here.

Angry Birds at TopGolf

TopGolf is a chain of high tech golf driving ranges.  You reserve a spot and can use these clubs (or bring your own), and you can scan your club to eject golf balls from a machine.  Then you swing and hit the ball and try to get it to go into big holes on the playfield for points.  I’m not totally sure how it works, but there are trackers in the ball so you can see the ball’s trajectory on a TV screen after you hit it.  A dumb way to describe it is that it’s kind of like bowling, but it’s golf.  Anyway, TopGolf has teamed up with Angry Birds for a new mode of play you can try.  There’s actually a TopGolf in the same city where I live, so I went there a few months ago to test it out, and I finally got a chance to write about how it works.

Game Preview: Guilty Gear -Strive- (PS4, PS5)

While Street Fighter 2 is probably the most recognizable one-one-one 2-D fighting game series, there are plenty of others that have made a name for themselves over the years.  With its anime styled characters and rockin’ soundtrack, Guilty Gear is just one of those series.  And there’s a new one coming out in about a month called Guilty Gear -Strive- and I got a preview beta build of it to review!  Now, keep in mind since this is a beta build, there may be changes to the final game.  Hopefully I’ll get to review that, too! Anyway, Guilty Gear -Strive- will be available on PS4 and PS5, but I’m playing the beta on PS4 here.

SNK vs. Capcom: The Match of the Millennium (Switch)

Game makers SNK and Capcom are famous for their 2-D one on one fighters, and they had a pretty big rivalry between each other for a while.  So that’s why it was a big deal back in the early 2000s when they both collaborated in making a few fighting games featuring both companies’ characters pitted against each other.  Crossover games like this weren’t as commonplace back then.  One of the first of these SNK vs. Capcom games was The Match of the Millennium for SNK’s handheld NEO GEO Pocket Color.  It was one of the best games for that system and now you can play it on Switch!

The King of Fighters 2002: Unlimited Match (PS4)

Game maker SNK is famous for its fighters, and one of their most popular ones is The King of Fighters.  It features characters from other classic SNK titles like Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, and even Ikari Warriors, and it’s a series still around today.  While they used to do yearly games, a new KOF game will still come out every now and then.  There’s even a new one coming soon (I hope I get to review it, too).  But in the meantime, you can download an updated version of one of the more popular games in the series on the PS4.  Well, actually I’m just assuming it’s one of the more popular ones, as I see sprite art and screenshots from it most often on the internet anyway.

TOHU (PS4, Switch, Xbox One, PC)

TOHU is a point and click adventure with beautiful hand-drawn graphics.  In the game, you play as a young girl who lives on one of several ‘fish islands.’  These are giant fish that float in the sky and have buildings and stuff on their backs.  Your girl character has the ability to change into a big, strong robot, which you’ll use when you need to lift heavy objects.  Change back to the girl when you need to climb obstacles or fit through small spaces.  A hooded character has been breaking stuff on the islands, and now the girl must find out what’s going on and fix it.  TOHU is available on most current game consoles, PC, and mobile devices, but reviewed on PS4 here.
