Vertical Drop Heroes HD (PS4, Vita, Xbox One, PC)

Vertical Drop Heroes is a roguelike game.  Meaning you travel through randomly generated dungeons and try and last as long as you can.  But the dungeons in this game are unique.  You drop vertically down, like a well, fighting baddies and collecting items along the way.  It kind of reminds me of Mr. Driller, except the gameplay is totally different (actually there is one game mode in the Japan only Drill Land game that is more like it).  It’s available for download on PS4, Vita, Xbox One, and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here.

Semispheres (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

Semispheres is a really unique and fun action puzzle game downloadable for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here.  You control two jellyfish-like things, one orange, one blue.  They both have a maze on each side of the screen that they must navigate to reach a common goal.  Once each one arrives, you can move to the next level.  But here’s the trick, you control both characters at the same time!  You use the left analog stick to move the orange jellyfish on the left side of the screen, and the right analog stick to control the blue one on the right.  The challenge comes from figuring out the puzzle mazes while keeping track of both characters!

Double Dragon IV (PS4)

Double Dragon was one of the first arcade side-scrolling beat ‘em ups, and when I was a kid, it was very popular.  It got tons of sequels, spin-offs, and home ports.  At one point, there was even a Double Dragon cartoon, toys, and even a live action movie!  (The movie was awful, but also funny in a B-Movie, MST3K sort of way) But you know what’s strange is that while there were games after Double Dragon 3, they were all spin-offs, like Super Double Dragon, BattleToads and Double Dragon, even a one-on-one fighter, and more recently: Double Dragon Neon.  But there has never been an official sequel to Double Dragon 3.  Until now, with Double Dragon IV, downloadable on PS4.

Link Twin (iOS, Google Play, Galaxy Apps)

Twins Tom and Lilly need your help getting home in this downloadable puzzle game available on iOS, Google Play, and Galaxy Apps, but reviewed on iPad here.  When you swipe up, down, left, or right, the twins will move in that direction at the same time.  Your goal is to get them to stand on two targets at once.  Use blocks, rocks, switches, and warp pads to help you along the way.  But if just one of them falls off the playfield, you’ll have to start the level over again.

Star Wars Pinball: Rogue One (PS4, PS3, Vita, Xbox One, 360, PC, iOS)

Star Wars: Rogue One was one of last year’s hit movies, and the first side story film set in the famed universe.  It’s all about the events that happened right before A New Hope, where a team of rebels tries to steal the Death Star plans to discover its weakness.  And now you can relive the action in pinball form with Star Wars Pinball: Rogue One for play on Zen Studios’ pinball platforms: Pinball FX2 and Zen Pinball 2.  They’re available on nearly all current game consoles and computers, but reviewed on PS4 here. Also maybe a slight spoiler warning or two for those who haven’t seen the movie yet.

In a magical realm, the Horn of Alignment has been stolen and evil covers the land.  It’s up to Ikki to save the day.  Ikki is a member of a race of cat people and she’s also one of the best hunters around.  Guide her through 2-D platform jumping areas as she defeats enemies and overcomes obstacles in this game that has exploration elements similar to Metroid style titles.  Hunter’s Legacy is available to download on PS4 and Xbox One, but reviewed on PS4 here.

New 3DS StreetPass Games: Mii Trek

The final new StreetPass game we’ll look at is Mii Trek.  You are a brave explorer looking for treasures, and you’re guided by a talking toucan with a British accent.  Almost expected him to say, “Follow your nose, it always knows!”  Will kids today get that?  Anyway, each StreetPass tagged friend acts as a travel companion, and the game reads how many steps they’ve taken with their 3DS.  The more steps you have, the farther you can go on the map.

New 3DS StreetPass Games: Ninja Launcher

In this new StreetPass game, you are the heir to a ninja clan, but there are enemies atop a cliff waiting to attack.  So you must use your ninja clan’s honored tradition of firing yourself from a cannon to do battle. But wait, it gets weirder.  When you enter the cannon, you find out you’re not wearing any clothes!  They explain your clothes would burn off if you wore them while being fired from the cannon.  This is where your StreetPass tagged friends come in.  Each one will stand on the ground and fly a kite, and on the kite will be an article of clothing, weapon, or armor.  It’s your job to adjust them so that when you are fired from the cannon, the kites will line up with your trajectory so that you’ll be able to nab as many items as you can so you can fight the enemies on the cliff.  For some reason, this game reminds me a bit of Angry Birds.

New 3DS StreetPass Games: Feed Mii

This new StreetPass mini-game is all about cooking, but it has kind of a creative premise.  You are a chef in a restaurant in an RPG, and heroes come in and eat your food to get energy to go off on their quests.  It kind of reminded me of another 3DS game I reviewed a few years ago called Weapon Shop de Omasse, where you were a blacksmith in an RPG weapon shop and made weapons for heroes.
