This coming Saturday, August 24, is another 3DS StreetPass Meetup for the North Dallas/Plano, TX area. Same time and place as always. I’ve been super busy lately, so I’m not EXACTLY sure if I’ll be able to go to this one, but I will certainly try. As always, more info can be found here.

Unplugged: The Return of the Fantasy RPGs

Last time I talked about role playing games, it was a discussion of Dungeons and Dragons, including the rereleases of many old retro versions of the game and adventures as well as the upcoming revision of the game entitled “D&D Next”. When it comes to Fantasy RPGs, there are many more fishes in the sea. Today we’ll look at two of them. First, we’ll examine Hero Kids, an extremely kid-friendly title for ages as young as four. Next, we’ll look at the “other” top-tier fantasy RPG: Pathfinder, produced by Paizo Publishing – past publisher of the D&D magazines Dragon and Dungeon. While it is moderately complex in its player options, actual player combat and skill resolutions aren’t too bad. What makes the Pathfinder RPG system stand out is the large level of support materials produced by Paizo. The Game Master (the person who runs the bad guys and helps manage the story) has many available options they can use to make things easier and help create a more immersive game (eg. maps, cards, tools to manage fights, etc…).
My Gamer Grandmother

This past week was kind of a rough one for me. My grandmother passed away so last weekend I went to Alabama for the funeral and stuff. I kind of wanted to use this blog to brag on her a bit, because not only was she a great person with many talents, she was also a gamer, too, believe it or not!
D&D: What’s Next?

A year and a half ago, the folks at Wizards of the Coast announced a move to create (yet another) new version of the popular role playing game (RPG) system, Dungeons and Dragons (D&D). This is the seminal role playing game that spawned many others, and inspired the use of its theme in other mediums such as computer games (ex. Skyrim, World of Warcraft) and board games (ex. Warhammer Quest, Descent, Castle Ravenloft). This new version, “D&D Next” for now, is freely available in prototype form for anyone interested in playtesting. It is an effort to ‘get back to the roots’ of D&D in some fashion, simplifying the base rules while simultaneously providing many optional bits for gamers who wish to emphasize specific styles of play. Along with moving forward towards a new, retro D&D game, Wizards of the Coast has spent the past year re-releasing many old, out of print titles in both electronic and premium hardback editions.
Project X-Zone: Team SEGA

For my last blog in my series on the characters in Project X-Zone, an action-strategy RPG on 3DS, we’ll look at the cast from SEGA’s games. Of all the three companies’ games listed in Project X-Zone, I probably know the least about the SEGA roster. So this will be a rather short and uninformative blog. Maybe some of you folks can fill in the gaps for me in the comments section?

Even though Namco Bandai is my favorite video game company, of the three game makers featured in Project X-Zone, I’m probably more familiar with the Capcom roster in this 3DS action strategy RPG featuring heroes and villains from Namco Bandai, Capcom, and SEGA’s games. Since last time we looked at the Namco Bandai characters found in Project X-Zone, this time we’ll look at the Capcom ones.

Project X-Zone: Team Namco Bandai

Project X-Zone is a new action strategy RPG for the 3DS. It’s actually pronounced Project “Cross” Zone, though. Anyway, the gameplay isn’t too much to write about, but the strength of this title comes from all the crossover characters from three different gaming companies working together to fight evil. Favorite characters from Namco Bandai, Capcom, and SEGA are featured in this game, so my next three big blogs are going to focus on the characters in Project X-Zone from each respective company. Since Namco Bandai published the game, we’ll take a look at their characters first.
