Saints Row 2 Content Review

I also have one of those big “10 Things Parents Should Know About” articles coming on this one. I’ve been back in a criminal city. Same as GTA IV, only here I’m a hispanic 6’6 300 redhead who speaks with a Spanish Accent. I can’t explain that. Here’s the content review for the game that gets no respect or reputation. Xbox 360 & PS3.

It’s a (little) big world afterall

The Playstation 3 exclusive LittleBigPlanet does not go on sale until the end of the month, but a few (thousand) lucky people have already been able to play with the beta.  As it has been one of my most anticipated titles for Sony’s big black machine, I’m very grateful that I am one of those lucky people.

Read on for my brief first impressions after a couple hours’ worth of play, and why it made my daughter cry.

GamerDad Family: Quotes

I mentioned doing something for the BBC earlier, what we had to do was speak into a minidisc player via a comically large radio microphone. We sat on the couch – I did not, repeat, did not – prepare the children and we started talking. Two takes later we’d convinced, mostly through threats of DS confiscation, that this was NOT a time to start making fart noises and laughing really loud.

Momgamer: Taking My Time

Take Your TimeI’m embarassed to report that I just finished Metal Gear Solid 4.

It’s not like I wasn’t ready to get in there and get going. I stood in line until midnight on June 12th, got it and my PS3 in my hot little hands, and booted it up for the first time that night. After many travails, I skipped sleeping and wrapped it up at 5am on August 18th. I invested a total of 19 hours of gametime and came out with the Panther rating.

Many of you are probably wondering exactly what the heck I was doing for two frickin’ months. Well, that’s what happens when you have to play a game 20 minutes at a time or only between 3 and 4 am. I run into this with a lot of games. I may get the game on Launch Day, but you can bet it won’t get finished anything like the timeframe most of the rest of the world considers standard.

Read this book: Grand Theft Childhood

GamerDad has made an incredible list of books relevant to gamers and the gaming industry. Let me add another to that list: “Grand Theft Childhood: The Surprising Truth About Violent Video Games and What Parents Can Do” by researchers Lawrence Kutner and Cheryl K. Olson of Harvard Medical School.   Here is a book that (finally) takes a reasoned and rational look at video games and their potential impact on the attitudes and behaviors of our kids. more…

Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway – Content Review

From WhatTheyPlay: Hell’s Highway tells the story of a single paratrooper unit during Operation Market Garden. The Allies are invading the Netherlands and pushing back against a fearsome German force. Anyone steeped in WWII drama will find the plot points familiar, and parents need to know that innocent citizens rescued by you meet grim fates. Women and even a child are not spared. There’s a drawn out death scene and several friends die in the game. There’s a lot of drama going on between the harrowing combat portions  the cut-scenes and movies alone merit the ESRB’s M-rating.

Read with your kids for Banned Books Week

This week marks the 27th annual ‘Banned Books Week’.  The supporters call it ” the only national celebration of the freedom to read.”  It also marks the 60th anniversary of a book burning in Binghamton NY where a group of Catholic school students led a burning of over 2000 books and mostly comic books.  They also combed the local area and threatened businesses who carried what they considered ‘inappropriate’ comic books with boycott.  This is relevant because the way comics were regarded back then largely echoes the way video games are treated now. more…

The Lemmings Are Coming!

I just got the PSP version of Lemmings really cheap, so in honor of one of my favorite 2-D puzzler game series, I thought I’d give a brief rundown on each game in the line. Let’s go!
