Rise of the Guardians (Wii, PS3, 360, DS, 3DS, Wii U)

The Rise of the Guardians video game is based on the recently released DreamWorks computer animated movie. The evil Pitch and his nightmares are threatening to envelope the world in fear, so it’s up to the guardians of children’s hopes and dreams to team up and stop him. Play as Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, Sandman, and Guardian newcomer Jack Frost as they battle Pitch’s nightmares in each of the Guardian’s realms. The Rise of the Guardians video game is available for nearly every modern gaming console, but the Wii and DS versions are reviewed here.

Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why’d You Steal Our Garbage?!! (3DS, DS)

Adventure Time on Cartoon Network is a smash hit, with toys, plush, and DVDs selling like hotcakes. Now there is an Adventure Time video game for Nintendo’s portable handhelds (3DS version reviewed here). Play as adventurous boy Finn and his magical shape-shifting stretchy talking dog Jake as they go on a quest in the land of Ooo to teach the Ice King a lesson. You see, the Ice King stole Finn and Jake’s garbage so he could make a garbage princess, and they can’t allow that. On their way, Finn and Jake will interact with characters from the show, including Princess Bubblegum, Lemongrab, Marceline, and many more! So is the game any good? Absolutely! You’ll just have to read on to find out why.

XCom: Enemy Unknown (360, PS3, PC)

In 1994, Microprose released X-Com: UFO Defense in the US and titled it X-Com: Enemy Unknown elsewhere. The mix of turn based squad combat with home base long-term strategy became a huge hit. Initial follow up games did well but eventually lost their way leaving fans of the series pining for the good old days. Things have now come full circle with the “reboot” of the series under its original name, XCom: Enemy Unknown for newer consoles and the PC. While I went into the new game with some reservations, the core game is still there and the modern graphics (while a bit too gory for my tastes) serve to draw me deeper into the game.

Jetpack Joyride (PS Minis)

The popular action game Jetpack Joyride, which was made by the same folks who brought us Fruit Ninja is now available as a PS Mini downloadable title for play on the PS3 or PSP. Play as a guy with a jetpack as you rampage through side scrolling levels, gathering coins, collecting goodies, and avoiding obstacles along the way.

Victorious: Taking the Lead (Wii, DS)

Victorious is a live action TV sitcom on Nickelodeon about a teen girl and her friends who attend a school for performing arts. Now you can get in on the act with Victorious: Taking the Lead for Wii and DS (DS version reviewed here). First, pick from two different characters from the show: Tori or Jade. There is a school play coming up and both of them want the lead part. So they’ll battle it out on the dance floor in this music/rhythm game.
