The Kore Gang (Wii)
The evil Krank Brothers are invading the Earth from the inside out! Deep inside their massive Krank Tank drilling machine, the sinister siblings have kidnapped the professor who invented the Kore Suit, an ability enhancing robotic mech. Now it’s up to two kids and a dog to don the Kore Suit and infiltrate the Krank Tank, rescue the professor, and save the world!
Beyblade: Metal Masters (DS)
Beyblade is a popular line of toys geared toward boys that puts a new spin (pun intended) on a classic plaything: tops. Players put two tops in a ‘battle arena’ and let them spin and bash each other. Whoever’s top spins the longest and doesn’t get knocked out wins. The toy line is so famous that it has spawned a long-running cartoon series and several video games. And you can play the newest one on the Nintendo DS.
Kirby’s Return to Dreamland – GamerBoy’s Take
That hungry puffball is back with yet another innovative game that’s easy to play, but surprisingly deep and rewarding. The game is perfectly safe for any age, but kids under 6 or so will find it difficult. Multiplayer means sharing the challenge and while the game is easy, it’s awfully fun to take control of Kirby, King Dedede, Waddledee and the former bad guy Metaknight. Henry (8), the GamerBoy, gives us his take!
Power Rangers Samurai (Wii, DS)
When Power Rangers first became popular in the US in the early to mid-90’s, my little brothers were at that perfect age to really get into them. When one of my brothers was going through potty training, we told him that the Blue Ranger uses the potty, and he didn’t have any accidents after that! Another one of my brothers dressed as the Green Ranger for Halloween, but he was so little that the costume swallowed him whole and everyone though he was an elf. He was so angry that nobody knew who he was supposed to be! We rented the Power Rangers SNES game several times, and I think I had nearly every line memorized from that stupid first Power Rangers movie because they watched it so much! Now my brothers are all nearly grown, and I was surprised when I got this new Power Rangers game to review. “The Power Rangers are still around?!?” I thought. Well apparently they are, and now you can join the newest Rangers on an adventure on the Wii and DS.
The New Challengers of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
When Marvel vs. Capcom 3 first came out, I wrote a couple of blogs about all the characters. One blog for the Capcom side, and one for Marvel. You can go back and read them if you want to. Now that Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom has been released, with 13 new playable fighters, I thought I’d do another blog featuring them!
Battlefield 3
War! What is it good for? Fun times online. Battlefield 3 is the main competition for the Call of Duty series (heard of it?), which means realistic and exaggerated modern warfare. There’s blood, intense violence and if shooting gets dull, punching and knifing are available. That said, it’s hard to keep teens away from this game and the fact is, war is in the zeitgeist. It’s happening and for the most part our culture is ignoring it – or at least the more gruesome aspects of it (not meant to be a partisan statement). Playing games like this can let kids address their fears. Think of games like this as playing “War” only with graphics. Since it’s primarily a multiplayer game, expect things to get intense.
Shinobi (3DS)
One of Sega’s most popular classic icons embarks on a new mission on the 3DS. First seen in arcades back in the late 80’s, Shinobi the ninja has appeared in games on the Genesis, Nintendo, and even the PS2. The ninja’s new adventure is a classic styled 2-D action platformer with 3-D graphics and brutal challenge.
Wappy Dog (DS)
Meet your kids’ newest pet: Wappy the robotic dog! Wappy Dog is a Nintendo DS game that comes with a real life robot dog toy. Both the game and the robot interact with each other. Use the DS to communicate with Wappy and care for him. Feed, clean, and play with Wappy on the DS, and you can even play games with or against Wappy. Pet the robot Wappy on his back and he’ll even respond! Just make sure not to pull his tail!
