My new iPad!

Guess what? I just bought a new ‘toy.’ It’s an iPad! So I thought I’d have G.P. the GamerPuppet (all decked out in his summer duds) help me show it off and talk a little bit about the games I’ve downloaded for it so far. So let’s get started!

Frogger Hyper Arcade Edition (360, PS3, Wii)

When I was a kid in the early 80’s, going to the arcade was a family event, and we each had our favorites. My dad would make a bee-line for Centipede, my mom would hop on over to Frogger, and I’d zip on over to the Pac-Man machine, of course. But Frogger was one of the few games to lure me away from the Pac, if only for a little bit. Now you can play yet another Frogger remake on Wii, PS3, and 360, but luckily this is a classic update done RIGHT! (360 version reviewed here).

Reader Review: The Walking Dead: Episode 2: Starved for Help (360, PS3, PC)

The Walking Dead is a super popular zombie apocalypse cable TV show (and comic book I recently learned), and TellTale’s game based on The Walking Dead has already sold over a million copies! And that was only the first episode! But now, the second episode is here, so I had my brother Jeff review it, since he knows more about the show and zombies in general than I do. (360 version reviewed here)

2nd Opinion: The Amazing Spider-Man (Wii, 360, PS3, DS, 3DS)

After Cary’s excellent, positive review, I thought I’d chime in with a few additional comments on the game as well as bring a perspective of the Wii version (reviewed here).  While the game manages to be pretty good for a movie-tie in, it didn’t rise to the level of a great, must-play game.  It provides a nice playground with which to take on various bad guys and pretend to be Spider-Man, but some control issues (at least on the Wii) prevent it from becoming a must-buy.  If you’re looking for a Spider-Man game, you won’t be disappointed, but it doesn’t have as much to offer non-fans.

Final Fantasy Fun!

In honor of Theatrhythm Final Fantasy being released this week, I thought I’d write a blog about my favorite games in the series, as well as my favorite music and characters in each of the games. We’ll even take a look at Final Fantasy spinoffs I like! Plus this year is Final Fantasy’s 25th Anniversary, so I had to write something! You know what’s funny is that while I claim to have been a HUGE Final Fantasy fan back in high school and college, there’s really only three in the main series that I really enjoyed. But I have taken a look at all the other ones, if only for a little bit. So let’s get started!

The Amazing Spider-Man (360, PS3, Wii, 3DS, DS)

Just in time for the release of the new reboot movie, The Amazing Spider-Man, comes a new video game. But instead of being based on the plot of the flick, the video game takes place shortly after the events of the film. After Spider-Man defeats the Lizard, other cross-breed mutants escape Oscorp’s labs and start infecting New York. It’s up to Spider-Man to stop them and save the city. Oscorp’s own robots are all about and programmed to destroy all cross-breeds, including Spider-Man, so Peter Parker will have to watch out for them, too! The Amazing Spider-Man is available for all major current video game consoles, but the 360 version is reviewed here.

LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (360, PS3, Wii, PC, 3DS, DS, Vita)

Lex Luthor and the Joker have teamed up to terrorize Gotham City with a new Kryptonite-powered super weapon! Batman and Robin are going to need all the help they can get! Lucky for them, Superman and other members of the Justice League will lend a hand in this LEGO sequel available for all the major current game consoles (360 version reviewed here).

Diablo III (Win/Mac)

As I began playing Diablo III, I quickly decided that I’ve had enough of the Diablo III franchise. Little things like how characters advance in power (not too much customization) and an over familiarity with the entire style of what is now Diablo-esque gameplay. However, I gave it a chance, and played on – after all I am a sucker for leveling up my character even if I might have preferred other choices. What I found, was that I was soon engrossed in the game. The main storyline seems to be cut and paste from any other “save the world from demonic enslavement”, but where Diablo (and Blizzard) shines are the little touches of humanity and creativity within the game. Sure, there are boss battles and epic loot to find, but stumbling across a touching (or perhaps morbid) little interlude in a side-quest is where Diablo III really shines. I have to conclude that Blizzard has done it again. Sure, there are many little (or even medium-sized) bits of the game I would have designed differently, but the polish and creativity put into the nooks and crannies of the game make it worth yet another dip into Diablo universe.
