Welcome to GamerDad: Gaming with Children. My name is Andrew S. Bub - the GamerDad - and I've been writing about videogames, movies, and children for over 15 years now. After working as a magazine journalist, I switched gears to write about how media violence affects children, educating parents about them, and working closely with magazines, newspapers, major retailers and even politicians. GamerDad is an internationally recognized expert in this field. Games, movies and media are fun, kids and families love them, they aren't going away. So join me in cutting through the hype and lets have a real conversation about the things that matter: Video Games, Violent Media, and their supposed effect on children and families.

Jewel Master: Cradle of Egypt 2 (3DS)
In this match-three style puzzler, your job is to build up Egypt by lining up three of the same kinds of shapes to make them disappear. It’s very similar to Bejeweled, but in this one, you finish rounds by breaking tiles underneath by clearing out items in front of them. Once you do that, it’s off to the next round. Use the stylus and touch screen to tap on items and switch them to adjacent ones to line up three in a row.
Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures (Wii U, 3DS, PS3, 360, PC)
For more than 30 years, Pac-Man has delighted gamers all across the world, and he’s still popular after all this time. In fact, Pac-Man has a brand new cartoon airing on Disney XD right now called Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures. I wrote an article about it a couple of months ago, you can check it out here (and while you’re at it, you can read about the iPad game that goes along with it). Now there is a home console video game based on Pac-Man’s new cartoon adventures. It’s available for most of the current consoles, but reviewed on Wii U here. I’ll be reviewing the 3DS version separately, as it’s a different kind of game. In the Wii U title, the leader of the ghosts Betrayus has stolen a giant freeze ray, and now Pac-Man and friends must stop him from using it to turn everyone into Pac-sicles. Help Pac-Man chomp ghosts and overcome obstacles in this 3-D platform jumping adventure.
Batman: Arkham Origins Strategy Guide (Book)
BeyBlade: Evolution (3DS)
After all these years, kids still play with tops. But now, they battle with each other with custom tops and arenas for them to spin and bash around in. The most popular battle top toy line, BeyBlade, is still around after all these years. And now there is a new video game based on this franchise using the unique capabilities of the Nintendo 3DS handheld.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Wii, 360, 3DS)
SpongeBob Squarepants: Plankton’s Robotic Revenge (PS3, 360, DS, 3DS, Wii U, Wii)
Plankton has built an army of robots to steal Mr. Krabs’ secret Krabby Patty recipe once again, and now it’s up to SpongeBob and friends to stop him. Play as Patrick, Sandy, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, and the yellow sponge himself in this action-brawler/shooter. Based on the popular Nickelodeon cartoon sensation, SpongeBob Squarepants: Plankton’s Robotic Revenge is available for nearly all the current game consoles, but reviewed on PS3 here.
Asterix: Total Retaliation (iPad)
Asterix is a very popular European comic book series that has spawned several animated movies and even video games over the years. But it’s not very well known here in the US. Asterix and his large friend Obelix are Gauls who defend their small village from the Roman army by using their wits and their magical super strength potion. I don’t know much about it myself, but from what I can tell, it looks like the European equivalent of Popeye. And now you can help Asterix defend his village from an army of Romans who want to take their secret potion with Asterix: Total Retaliation. It’s a strategy game that bears more than a passing resemblance to Plants vs. Zombies. It’s available for iOS devices, but reviewed for iPad here.
Skylanders Swap Force Swap-tacular Special!
The video game/action figure toy combo that has charmed young gamers and collectors for the past couple of years is back with a new entry in the series! And this one has a new twist. Certain figures have swappable tops and bottoms so you can mix and match them for countless combinations! Skylanders is a big deal here at GamerDad, so here’s a big blowout review of both the Wii U and 3DS versions of Swap Force, with lots of pictures! The new game is also available for Wii, PS3, and 360.
Skylanders: Swap Force Strategy Guide (Book)
Today and this weekend, we’re going to celebrate the recent release of the newest game in the Skylanders toy and game sensation: Swap Force. But before I post my review of the actual game, let’s take a look at the strategy guide for the new title! It’s from BradyGames and a must-have for anyone who is really into Skylanders and wants to master it!
Gabrielle’s Zombie Attack (iPad)
Yesterday we looked at a free-to-play iOS game from Natsume called Gabrielle’s Monster Match. It featured characters from Gabrielle’s Ghostly Groove 3-D, an adorably spooky music game for 3DS. Today we’ll take a look at a more recent free-to-play spinoff called Gabrielle’s Zombie Attack. It’s available for iOS devices as well, but reviewed on iPad here. It’s mostly similar to the puzzle game Zuma.
