GamerDad and family Welcome to GamerDad: Gaming with Children. My name is Andrew S. Bub - the GamerDad - and I've been writing about videogames, movies, and children for over 15 years now. After working as a magazine journalist, I switched gears to write about how media violence affects children, educating parents about them, and working closely with magazines, newspapers, major retailers and even politicians. GamerDad is an internationally recognized expert in this field. Games, movies and media are fun, kids and families love them, they aren't going away. So join me in cutting through the hype and lets have a real conversation about the things that matter: Video Games, Violent Media, and their supposed effect on children and families.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (3DS)

CLOUDY_BOXIn the new computer animated movie Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (loosely based on the book), the gang from the first film travel back to their island which was ravaged by giant food storms. On their return trip in the sequel, they discover the food has turned into living creatures! While the new 3DS game is based on the movie, it actually plays strikingly similar to Fruit Ninja!

Scribblenauts Unmasked (Wii U, 3DS, PC)

UNMASKED_BOXMaxwell is just a regular little boy. He loves reading comic books and playing with his sister Lily. But Maxwell and Lily have two special gifts. Maxwell has a magic notebook that he can use to write anything in it, and it’ll come to life! And Lily has a magic globe that she can use to travel anywhere she wants! One day, Maxwell and Lily decided they wanted to visit their favorite DC Comics superheroes, so they used their magic items to travel to Gotham City. But when they arrived, Lily’s globe broke and all the starites that power it flew out. Unfortunately, the starites ended up in the hands of various DC super villains, so now it’s up to Maxwell and Lily to team up with Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and hundreds of other DC heroes to track down the starites and save the day! Cary’s Top Five Video Game Clowns

turbohorseiconThe late summer, early fall time is what I like to call ‘fair and circus season.’ You don’t see them much anymore, but used to around this time of year, I would always see little travelling circuses and carnivals set up in the parking lots and open fields around town. Plus it’s also the time of year that the Texas State Fair opens. And what do you usually see at all these fairs, circuses, and carnivals? Clowns! So in honor of those silly and sometimes scary merrymakers of mirth, here are my top five favorite clowns in video games! Plus, with Halloween coming up, I thought this would be a good idea since some do find clowns frightening.

Dragon Fantasy Book II (PS3, Vita)

DRAGONBack when I was in high school, I was really into 16-bit RPGs on the Super Nintendo. I played nearly nothing but games such as Final Fantasy IV, Secret of Mana, FF6, Chrono Trigger, Lufia 2, and many others. But as the technology and memory storage of games got more advanced in the 32-bit days and beyond, I kind of lost interest in RPGs. One or two may have grabbed my attention since then, but nothing like back in the 16-bit days. So what happened? Well, I feel that modern RPGs have become too long and meandering, and focus more on story than gameplay. Plus, life, work, and other commitments have kept me from investing the 40 to 50 hours needed to finish today’s RPGs, so it’s not entirely the games’ fault. But every now and then, I still miss the 16-bit days of RPGs. So if you’re like me, I have some good news for you! Dragon Fantasy Book II was recently released on PS3 and Vita as a downloadable title (reviewed on PS3 here), and it’s a throwback to nearly everything you loved about 16-bit RPGs!
