Welcome to GamerDad: Gaming with Children. My name is Andrew S. Bub - the GamerDad - and I've been writing about videogames, movies, and children for over 15 years now. After working as a magazine journalist, I switched gears to write about how media violence affects children, educating parents about them, and working closely with magazines, newspapers, major retailers and even politicians. GamerDad is an internationally recognized expert in this field. Games, movies and media are fun, kids and families love them, they aren't going away. So join me in cutting through the hype and lets have a real conversation about the things that matter: Video Games, Violent Media, and their supposed effect on children and families.

Horsing Around With the My Little Pony iPad Game and Cartoon
One of Hasbro’s most popular and well-known toy lines for girls: My Little Pony, has gotten an extra boost in recent years thanks to a fairly new cartoon based on the toys that’s surprisingly a higher quality show than what you may expect (there are reasons for that which we’ll go into later). So in honor of the release of the My Little Pony iPad game, based on the cartoon and toys, here’s a blog featuring a review of the game and overview of the cartoon show!
Hungry Hungry Hippos (iPad)
Two of my favorite board games when I was a little kid were Connect Four (pretty sneaky, sis), and Hungry Hungry Hippos. Especially the hippo game because it required no skill to play, and it made a heck of a racket! Later on they made a coin op version of Hungry Hungry Hippos in arcades. The balls automatically came out the middle, the computer would control any empty hippos mechanically, and you could win tickets, too. If I had enough room, I’d be tempted to buy one at an arcade auction. Now the hippos are entering the 21st century with the Hungry Hungry Hippos iPad app, and best of all, it’s TRULY free-to-play! No gimmicks or extra things to buy!
Mr. Potato Head: Create & Play (iPad)
Tanks a Lot!
Nanolyte (iPad)
If you like puzzlers and have an iPad or other iOS device, you’re in for a real treat. Nanolyte is a color-matching puzzle game that’s free on the App store. Well, at least it was free when I downloaded it. I know things like that can change at a drop of the hat. But you should check it out anyway. The playfield is full of multicolored hexagons, and you must rotate them to match three in a row. It’s similar to the Xbox LIVE puzzle game Hexic (which is also free).
Little Amazon (iPad)
Help a little jungle girl break out of a cage and escape evil in this downloadable mobile game for iOS devices. Little Amazon is a continuously running 2-D platformer that’s similar to Jetpack Joyride, without the jetpack of course. When you start, you’ll constantly run to the right. Tap the jump icon to hop over obstacles, and use the attack icon to defeat any evil minions in your way. If you get hit, you’ll get captured and have to start at the cage again. The levels are randomly generated, so each run is different every time.
Ninja Toss (iPad)
In Ninja Toss, you fling a fat ninja with a slingshot and see how far he’ll go. To start, tap the screen when the meter on the top of the screen is in the middle, and the fat ninja will be flung farther. You don’t really have much control over your ninja after that, but he’ll bounce on the ground for a little while, and you can use a special lighting attack with a tap on the screen to give him an extra boost. As he flies and bounces, the fat ninja will hit running critters that look like rice balls. Certain rice balls can help him bounce higher. When you can’t bounce anymore, you can play again to try and beat your score, or go to the shop with rice you’ve collected from bouncing on the rice ball people to buy upgrades so you can go farther next time.
